Unicorn Overlord: The Self-Effacing Sorcerer Quest Walkthrough

During the early hours of Unicorn Overlord, exploration is key. If you go directly to your main story objective, you are more than likely going to get smacked down by tough opponents who outlevel you significantly armed with far more complex tools and units than you have. Instead, searching for side quests to take on is the key to success.

PostsThe Self-Effacing Sorcerer is one such side quest. It's a comprehensive introduction to the Wizard class, which can be very tricky when you're used to brutes with few tactics other than 'hit things until they die. Here's the rundown.
Battle Overview
Enemy Level
5
Victory Conditions
Defeat Auch
Defeat Conditions
The Liberation's command post is captured
The time limit expires
As expected, you're up against a new class here: Wizards. These provide a tough foe as they deal magickal damage, which targets magickal defense, something that many units are lacking in.
Apart from Wizards, you're also up against lots of tough Housecarls and annoyingly defensive Fighters.
We recommend the following formations to have an easy and efficient time with this side quest:
Lead Unit
Back Row
Chloe / Soldier
Rolf / Archer
Soldiers can reliably attack the back row without needing the front row being defeated first, and we'll use the Archer to support the Strike Team with arrows. Make the Archer the leader.
Front Row
Alain
Strike Force
Back Row
Clive / Knight
Sharon / Cleric
The Knight's Assaulting Lance will handily dispatch entire groups of Wizards, while the Gryphon Knight's superior magickal defence will let the team survive longer against them. The Cleric is there for added tankiness. Make the Knight the leader.
Front Row
Gryphon Knight
These two formations can deal with this stage very well, with each of them being tailored to different enemies. The Lead Unit will take point, clearing the way for the Strike Force to mop up the enemies it needs to with relative ease.
You can recruit a Gryphon Knight from Fort Mainteneaut - it's best to get a generic one at this point in the game, as it'll be quite a while before you can recruit the first unique Gryphon Knight unit.
How To Beat The Self-Effacing Sorcerer
If you're following our strategy, you'll want to start the stage by deploying both the Lead Unit and the Strike Force. A trio of Wizards will be very close to your command post. Use either team to deal with these - they're very weak.
Next, use your Strike Force to eradicate the tower full of Wizards and then the wandering squads of Axebearers. The Lead Unit, on the other hand, should head directly to the occupied fort to deal with the Wizards there.
Once you have the fort occupied, feel free to deploy any other units you have - the enemies that Auch sends out at you whenever you claim a tower are weak and can provide a nice chunk of experience.
Before you head north to the bridge, be sure to pick up the Farsight Crystal laying in wait in the field to the south of the second tower.
After dealing with the fort and both Wizard towers, move your army north over the bridge and deal with the weaklings and the Wizard tower. Eventually, you'll be left with no enemies, bar Auch and his crew.
Auch is a tough opponent thanks to the bulky Soldier in the first rank and the fact that Auch himself has a nasty passive in Fire Burst, which deals a significant amount of damage if you aren't able to kill him in one round.
CloseTo deal with Auch, set up your Archer unit in the nearby tower and then send your Strike Team at Auch, remembering to pick up the nearby Beckoning Chime on the way. With the Ranged Assist from the tower and the Strike Team's strength, this should be a one-round kill. If not, you shouldn't take enough damage to make things a worry.
For an even more efficient kill method, use the Archer's Arrow Rain ability on Auch before the Strike Team gets there to soften them up a bit.
For beating Auch, you'll get his powerful staff, Chlorotic. For completing the quest, you'll get a Baroque Rod, a Revival Orb (S), the House Aubry Heraldry, and 15 Renown. You also have the option to recruit Auch or not.
Should You Recruit Auch?
After the battle, you're faced with two options: to recruit Auch or to execute him:
- Recruiting Auch will gain you a competent Wizard right off the bat. He comes equipped with a Silk Hood, which is a nice boost for magickal attackers.
- Executing Auch, on the other hand, will net you a Lapis Pendant. This is a fantastic accessory that increases a unit's PP by one point.
An early extra Lapis Pendant can be a big help to certain strategies, and Auch doesn't really have anything going for him other than being unique with some Rapport conversations to unlock. On the other hand, recruiting Auch means you don't have to spend Honors recruiting a generic Wizard (and you'll need a Wizard to overcome the Battle of Barbatimo), and Lapis Pendants are relatively common further down the line.
