Video games and space aliens have a long and relatively successful history, sure, but nothing is more bizarre than spotting a cosmic hitchhiker where you know they don't belong.
Related10 Strangest Alien Easter Eggs In Games
Gamers can't play ten games without encountering a reference to extraterrestrials, so here is a nod to the best Easter eggs about aliens.
PostsGames are filled with moments like these, moments where we need to do a double take just to make sure that yes, that was in fact an alien, and no, you didn't just fall asleep for a second. Some are more involved while others are simple Easter eggs, but either way, these are some of gaming's most downright surprising close encounters of the virtual kind.

9 Red Dead Redemption 2
Visitors From Beyond
The lakeside cabin north of Emerald Ranch in the arid plains of Red Dead Redemption 2 holds a dark secret. Inside, you'll find a note left behind by what seems to be a long-disbanded cult, and if you follow its instructions, returning to the cabin at 2:00 am on the night of the half moon, your reward is the chance to see a most peculiar midnight display.

PostsIn a game grounded enough for realism to be one of its main selling points, the sight of strange lights in the sky, watching over the plains from afar is sure to catch at least a few would-be cowboys off guard.
8 Grand Theft Auto 5
The Creature Under The Bridge
Grand Theft Auto 5 is all about bending the rules until they break, so it makes sense that when told during the prologue to cross the railroad tracks and keep going forward, a few especially rebellious players might instead decide to turn right and sneak down under the bridge to chill instead.
Your reward for doing so however is something that makes a bit less sense: an entire alien body, frozen in the river. The design, not too dissimilar from the classic Xenomorph design, may be frightening and surprising, but at least it's safely sealed away in the ice... for now.
7 Animal Crossing: New Leaf
There Is Nothing Wrong With Your Television Set
Though relatively famous today thanks to the popularity of Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Nintendo Switch, the Animal Crossing series' 3DS outing, New Leaf, is where the mysterious 3:33 am broadcasts of aliens spouting their strange little alien words and generally being creepy little goobers for a while on any active television in the game really started.
RelatedAnimal Crossing: The Rarest Fish Of All Time
It's tough out there for an Animal Crossing: New Horizons angler. While we all want to find those super rare fish, we keep catching ultra common ones.
PostsThe broadcast feels like something right out of The Outer Limits and can definitely be more than a little off-putting, but really, what isn't off-putting at three in the morning? Either way, very surprising to see.
6 Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Revenge Of The Shroobs
Sure, the Mario & Luigi series' second outing, Partners in Time, sees the bros. teaming up with their younger selves to stop an evil race of aliens called the Shroobs from taking over the Mushroom Kingdom and presumably also the world. However, given how different the maps are between Partners in Time and its sequel, Bowser's Inside Story, there's really no reason to suspect any alien encounters at all, but hidden within the walls of Bowser's Castle, some interstellar stowaways await their chance to get revenge.
Frozen in ice and trapped behind a mysterious password protected door, a group of three surviving Shroob warriors can be found and thawed, resulting in a surprise optional boss battle and some pretty wild timeline implications.
5 Outlaws
The Strange Cow Ritual That Must Be Seen To Be Believed
There is probably exactly one reason to play or discuss LucasArts' 1990s FPS, Outlaws, today, and that reason is that it is beyond packed with bizarre Easter eggs and wacky secrets.
The most interesting, and possibly weirdest thing in the entire game, is that if you throw some dynamite into the outhouse and shoot it, you could find yourself a witness to something truly out there. Two aliens, holding a massive saw, tower over an upside-down, defenseless cow, clearly ready to cut the poor thing right in two. A friend of the two spots and stops you before any real carnage can happen, but the entire situation might just be the most bizarre alien encounter in all of gaming.
4 House Of Ashes
They Were Actually From Space The Whole Time
Supermassive's The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is notable among the games in its series for being the only one to veer from traditional gothic monsters like ghosts or zombies and shoot all the way into the realm of science fiction with a shocking late-game twist that nobody could have seen coming.

Which game will survive? Which will not? The choice is ours.
PostsTurns out, the vampiric monsters thought to be ancient supernatural deities are actually just aliens who crash-landed after a run in with some nasty space parasites, making them seem just as empathetic as the human characters. Even though it's a huge part of the game, there's still no denying that House of Ashes' alien twist came as a surprise to most.
3 Stardew Valley
The Rarest Sight In The Game Is A Pretty Stellar One
Stardew Valley is full of interesting secrets and exciting hidden events, but the rarest one in the game just so happens to be a brief encounter with visitors from beyond the stars.
With only a 0.001 percent chance of occurring, spotting a UFO on your end of day results screen in Stardew Valley is sure to catch you by surprise, but this particular interstellar encounter brings with it some nice, hefty bragging rights, so savor the experience should it ever happen to you, because it's probably not going to happen again anytime soon.
2 Super Mario 3D Land
Wait...That's Not The Comet Observatory!
Ah yes, Super Mario 3D Land...the one we all forget about. Indeed, going back to Mario's 3DS adventures these days might not be at the top of everyone's to-do list, but for those who happen to revisit memory lane with a replay of this portable 3D platformer, a sweet, sci-fi secret awaits through the binoculars in World 1-3.
After checking around for a while and watching Toad lob a coin off a cliff, take a look at the upper right-hand corner of the viewable area to catch a glimpse of an oddly realistic-looking flying saucer. The craft may be small, but this alien encounter leaves a big impression.
1 Silent Hill 2
Have You Seen My Wife?
Silent Hill has a long, fantastic history of truly out-there endings, but this one...this one's out of this world. The game parodies an old black and white silent film (a fitting medium for a game with 'silent' in the name) and sees James come face to face with an old friend from a previous game, only for those pesky aliens to come down and shoot at him.
Of all the endings in Silent Hill 2, this is probably the most famous, right up there with the dog ending, and that just goes to show how jarring and unexpected an experience it was back when players first experienced it all those years ago.
