The Sims 4: How To Develop Toddler Skills

It's hard to be a tiny toddler in the big world of The Sims 4. Here, you can learn about the five Toddler Skills that are essential to growing up.

Nevertheless, being a toddler is a crucial stage of a Sim's life, and there are skills they will need to learn and hone if they want to grow up to be successful. Communication is one of those skills, and even though it might not seem as critical, since toddlers have a decent level of ability in this game, it is still very important.

What Is The Communication Skill?

The Communication skill is another straightforward skill; it refers to a toddler's ability to talk to and communicate effectively with other Sims. Being proficient in Communication allows toddlers to say more concrete things as they improve on the skill.

How To Gain The Comunication Skill

To gain the Communication skill a toddler must talk to another Sim, though they will only be able to Babble at first.

There are a few other ways to acquire it, such as using the Wabbit Tablet to Watch Toddler Videos, but babbling to another Sim is the quickest and easiest option.

How To Improve The Communication Skill

There are a few ways to improve the Communication skill. Like all other toddler skills, Communication can be improved through things a toddler can do by themselves, or it can be developed with the help of an older Sim.

The available options to improve the Communication skill are as follows:

  • Babble to Self.
  • Babble to other Sims.
  • Watch Toddler Videos on the Wabbit Tablet.
  • Learn to Talk with Flashcards (requires help from caretaker).
  • Talk with Stuffed Animals (like a Giant Teddy Bear).
  • Talk to other Sims.

The ideal mood for toddlers to learn Communication faster is Happy.

You will often notice that there is no progress bar above your toddler's head when performing some of the required actions for leveling up the Communication skill. This is normal, as most of these actions do not show the bar at all.

However, that does not mean your toddler is not advancing their skill if you can't see it.

If you go into the Skills panel, you will notice that whenever you perform these actions, the background of the bar lights up in a very light green, indicating that your toddler is learning even if you can't see the progress outright.

This does make the Communication skill a little harder to keep track of, though.

Benefits Of Leveling The Communication Skill

Leveling up skills for your toddler works exactly as leveling up skills for older Sims. When you manage to get to a new level, you will unlock more interactions or benefits, expanding the possibilities of what your Sim can do.

These are all the benefits of the five levels of Communication during toddlerhood:

Level

Benefit

One

None.

Two

Can now look at picture books and play at the Dollshouse with other Sims.

Three

Can now name Toys, Dolls, and Stuffed Animals.

Four

Can now read toddler books by themselves.

Five

With an imagination fully developed, the toddler gains the ability to View Art.

Leveling up the Communication skill will also help your toddler be a more accomplished child.

Sims will get a head-start on their childhood Social skill as they age up, depending on how well they developed their Communication skill when they were a toddler.

A level three Communication skill will grant them one point in Social, while a level five Communication skill will grant them two points.

There are also general benefits for leveling up all skills. Successfully achieving levels three or five of all skills can give your Sims a secret trait and some pretty hefty skill gains boosts, as seen below:

Trait

Requirements

Reward

Happy Toddler

Achieve three points in all toddler skills.

  • Ten percent boost on all skill gains for life.
  • Randomly get a Happy moodlet from remembering their happy toddlerhood.

Top Notch Toddler

Achieve maximum points in all toddler skills.

  • 25 percent boost on all skill gains for life.
  • 25 percent boost on career gains for life.
  • Randomly get a Happy moodlet from remembering their happy toddlerhood.

Potty is a special case, as it does not correspond with any later skills, and it only has three levels in total.

Toddler Traits That Help With Communication

Traits are what make Sims' personalities unique, and toddlers have them too, though theirs are a little simpler than older Sims' as they only get to have one. This singular trait will decide how your toddler behaves in general and what they will need for you to feel fulfilled.

Some toddler traits also give them the ability to learn certain skills faster.

To make a toddler an ace in Communication, you will likely want to give them the Charmer trait. This improves their ability to gain Communication points, while also making them immune to Stranger Danger, which is a common moodlet toddlers get from interacting with unknown Sims.
