Getting your hands on new characters in The First Descendant is where the real grind of the game begins. Each character has unique crafting materials needed to complete research with Anais in Albion. These can either be looted or will need other materials to craft them. It can be an expensive and long process to unlock a new character.

This guide covers the process of unlocking new characters, as well as an overview of what's needed for each Descendant (or character) in the game.

How To Unlock New Characters In The First Descendant

You get your first Descendant for free at the start of the game, so choose wisely between Lepic, Ajax, and Viessa.

Then you'll get access to Bunny by completing main story quests. You can read the guide to unlocking Bunny here.

However, any future Descendants must be earned. Here's how.

Researching A New Descendant

To unlock a new Descendant, you need to head to Anais, the magister in Albion. At this station you can research new characters.

Here's a list of the characters in the open beta:

  • Gley
  • Freyna
  • Sharen
  • Blair
  • Jayber
  • Valby
  • Lepic
  • Ajax
  • Kyle
  • Viessa
  • Bunny
  • Ultimate Lepic
  • Ultimate Viessa

Once there, you'll see a list of Descendants that can be researched. Each one has four items you need to craft and earn before you can research them.

Each one of these has its own requirements, materials, and progression roadblocks.

They also take time to research individually.

Character Research Guide

Let's use Gley as an example on how to craft/research a new character.

To research Gley, you'll need to spend 100,000 credits and have access to these materials:

  • Gley Enhanced Cells
  • Gley Stabilizer
  • Gley Spiral Catalyst
  • Gley Code

It will also take 12 hours to craft Gley.

To unlock Gley Enhanced Cells, you need to gather:

  • 192 Repton
  • 384 Superfluid
  • 3 Anti-Gravity Fixer
  • Gley Enhanced Cell Blueprint

And then research Gley Enhanced Cells.

Repton and Superfluid can be found while exploring the world and salvaging junk.

Rarer items, like the Anti-Gravity Fixer, will be dropped by monsters on missions.

To find where you can acquire items, simply click on the item in the crafter and press "F" to open the Acquisition window.

However, to actually craft a Gley Enhanced Cell you will need to complete an Intercept Battle: Obstructer, Amorphous Material 10.

This means that characters are essentially locked behind grinding progression.

What Are Void Intercept Battles?

These are instanced fights with boss-level enemies. You unlock your first Void Interceptor fight at level 10, and then earn extra fights at level 22, level 36, and so on.

You will need to complete these to unlock new characters as certain materials will only drop from these battles.

As such, characters are also level gated in The First Descendant.
