The Elder Scrolls 6 is still a long way off, to put it lightly. Bethesda is busy with Starfield, an incredibly ambitious spacefaring RPG with 1,000 planets to explore. But forget those 1,000 planets, because TES fans are still itching to find out which province we'll be visiting in the sixth game.

Between Skyrim and TES 6, we've had The Elder Scrolls Online launch, rebranded, and updated with 25 DLC making almost all of Tamriel explorable. Meanwhile, fans are chugging away to remake Oblivion and Morrowind while another dedicated team brought Daggerfall to the Unity engine. Nothing official has launched aside from the mobile game Blades and the now-defunct card game Legends, but there's still information out there to pry from the seams.

Updated on July 4, 2023, by James Troughton: Due to the recent FTC hearings regarding the Microsoft Activision Blizzard King buyout and multiple interviews with executive producer Todd Howard, we do know a little bit about what's in store thanks to some cryptic clues and even more cryptic teasers. That's why we have updated this article with the most recent information on The Elder Scrolls 6.

The Elder Scrolls 6 Release Date - 2028 At The Earliest

According to Bethesda boss Todd Howard, most of the team is working on Starfield while The Elder Scrolls 6 is currently in its "design [phase]". Starfield comes out on September 6, 2023, so Bethesda will be shifting its focus fairly soon.

However, Xbox head Phil Spencer claims that the game is still at least five years away from launch, meaning that it won't be here until 2028 at the earliest.

The Elder Scrolls 6 Setting - Unknown

Bethesda shared a CGI teaser in 2018 that shows a vague sweeping shot of mountains and plains, which many believe might be High Rock, Hammerfell, or both.

These theories were fueled again in 2020 when Bethesda dropped a picture of Skyrim with three candles scattered on top. It said that if you "transcribe the past," you can "map the future." Many took that to mean the image was a puzzle with the answer being the setting. The candles mark Solitude, Yngvild, and Elinhir, a town in Hammerfell.

Starfield Teaser

There's also what looks like a teaser for The Elder Scrolls 6 in one of Starfield's trailers. There's a small scratching on the ship's console that is oddly reminiscent of Iliac Bay, the water between Hammerfell and High Rock.

It's looking more and more likely that TES6 will take us to the home of the Redguard people, which we have seen snippets of in the dedicated Redguard game, The Elder Scrolls Online, and Daggerfall.

The Elder Scrolls 6 Trailer

The official announcement trailer is only 36 seconds long and is entirely CGI. It was unveiled at E3 2018,showing off the new logo and the mountainous plains mentioned prior.

The Elder Scrolls 6 Engine

Daggerfall ran on XnGine, while Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 ran on Gamebryo. Bethesda then revamped and iterated on Gamebryo to make the Creation Engine which was used for Skyrim and Fallout 4.

With the advent of Starfield, Bethesda developed Creation Engine 2, which is also being used for The Elder Scrolls 6. Bethesda is putting a lot of stock in its new engine, so we could see a similar leap in quality as we did from the likes of Fallout 3 to 4.

Is Elder Scrolls 6 Going To Be Xbox Exclusive?

Ever since Microsoft bought Bethesda, its games have been exclusive to Xbox — Starfield and Redfall are not available on PlayStation. However, future games will be handled on a case-by-case basis, and there's no confirmation as of writing about whether TES6 will join other Bethesda games as Xbox exclusives.

Industry insider Jeff Grubb claimed that "Elder Scrolls 6 is planned as Xbox exclusive [the tweet is now gone]," which Sony also believes to be the case. Until Microsoft or Bethesda announce anything, we simply don't know.

Shirley Curry, an 82-year-old YouTuber known for playing Skyrim, was recently added as a companion thanks to a mod, but Bethesda is going to take it a step further.

She will be appearing as a non-playable character in The Elder Scrolls 6 thanks to a fan petition signed by 45,000 people.

The Elder Scrolls 6 Mod Support

Bethesda and modding go hand in hand. A huge part of Skyrim's longevity is its dedicated modding community, the same community remaking Morrowind and Oblivion, expanding into new territories like Bruma and Hammerfell, but there's no word on whether The Elder Scrolls 6 will have mod support.

Nonetheless, with modding being integrated directly into Skyrim's re-release and Fallout 4 — even on consoles — it's safe to say that Bethesda will uphold tradition and let the fans go wild.
