The deep ash covering much of Solstheim's southern half has begun to stir with new life. Ash Spawn, an enemy not found on Skyrim, have been attacking Raven Rock to the bewilderment of the Redoran Guard defending the settlement. Stopping to help Captain Veleth fend off a wave of attackers will let you discover the centuries-old secret that is bringing the creatures back to life.

You will need to go to an ancient and decrepit castle on the island. Once inside, you must fight your way through the Ash Spawn to remove them as a threat and protect Raven Rock.
Starting March Of The Dead
The quest starts when you leave Raven Rock through the Bulwark. It is the large, stone wall built to protect the town from ash storms. You will see Captain Veleth of the Redoran Guard, dressed in distinctive Bonemold Guard Armor, fighting off some Ash Spawn. He is near the Old Attius Farm near the bodies of several fallen guardsmen.
You will likely pass through early in the Dragonborn story during the quest Dragonborn.
Once you help him defeat his attackers, he will ask you to search their bodies for clues. Look for a note titled "Declaration of War". Giving him the note will surprise him as the General that signed off on the declaration died 200 years ago. He asks you to go to Fort Frostmoth to investigate further.
It is also possible to start the quest by entering Fort Frostmouth without speaking to Captain Veleth and killing General Falx Carius independently. He will have a note on his body that can be turned in to Captain Veleth to complete the quest.
Searching Fort Frostmoth
The Fort in question is located on Solstheim's southern coast and is directly east of the Old Attius Farm. The years have not been kind to it and the structure is badly damaged. To enter, walk across the coastline and look out for a set of stairs leading up to the entrance.
Your enemies are primarily comprised of Ash Spawn. These volcanic creatures are notable for their resistance to fire and ability to use Flame spells.Avoid using Flame spells against them and try to use Potions of Resist Fire to stay protected.
You will need to reach a door on the western wall to enter Fort Frostmouth. It is safest to clear out the courtyard instead of rushing into the Fort itself. The defenders will attack you in numbers as soon as you enter.
Defeating General Falx Carius
The General is waiting for you deep within the Fort. Head right at the entrance and take the stairs down. Be alert for Ash Spawn emerging from the ash to fight you.Eventually, youwill find a room protected by two Ash Spawn and a locked door that requires a key.
This area has several opportunities for getting more loot. The webbed-up doorway to the west leads to a room with albino spiders and explosive Flame-Cloaked Spiders. While dangerous, clearing it out will allow you to access Heart Stone deposits inside.
A master-locked door to the northwest can be opened by a skilled lockpick or with the Fort Frostmouth Key. Searching for it will provide you with more loot and a significant amount of food.
Go through the doorway to the north of the locked door and head west at the junction. There, you will find a knapsack containing the Fort Frostmouth Key and a journal explaining how the General is alive.
With the key in hand, you can go through the locked door and confront the General in combat. He is a difficult enemy to fight and sports a unique hammer that will deal significant damage to you.
The General is helped by several Ash Spawn. It would be best to kite them across the chamber and use the pillars to shelter from Firebolts.Focus on the Ash Spawn as the General lacks ranged attacks and can be kept at arm's length with swift movement.
Once you defeat him, return to Raven Rock and speak to Captain Veleth and inform him of your success. With the General gone, the Ash Spawn no longer threaten Raven Rock. He will be pleased with the news and give you gold as a reward, scaled to your level.
Make sure to loot General Carius' body for the Champion's Cudgel, a unique two-handed warhammer that is equivalent to a glass warhammer with a special enchantment for Chaos damage.
This enchantment has a 50 percent chance to deal Shock, Frost, Fire damage, or a combination of the three. Thanks to the inherent randomness of the weapon, it is useful in most situations by being able to avoid enemy elemental resistances.
