It can be easy to let your guard down with children. Their disarming demeanor makes it hard to be suspicious of their true intentions. That said, The Witcher 3 cautions against blindly trusting their word in the quest, Never Trust Children.

It's split into two parts, with one taking place in Novigrad and the other in Skellige. Both halves will automatically fail if you choose to ignore the child in question, though these events won't reward you with much. If you're interested in experiencing these encounters, this quest will help you find and complete both encounters with the children.
Where To Start Never Trust Children In Novigrad
The encounter within the free city can be easy to miss because it's right outside the tilted tower that Triss calls home, which you're probably rushing into for a quest. Look for a child crying at a street corner just north of the entrance.
The quest will automatically fail if you ignore the child and will become impossible to complete.
If you try to ask the child why they're crying, the brat will dash off and lead you to a pair of thugs waiting in a secluded corner. You'll have to slaughter the men for the encounter to end.
Where To Start Never Trust Children In Skellige
A second encounter with a child is on Ard Skellig, between Arinbjorn and Sund, on the island's western coast where you'll find a child crying by the road. They'll tell Geralt that their father is being attacked by a bear.
They'll lead Geralt into the woods where you'll find a group of bandits instead of a bear. The gang will try to kill Geralt. You'll have to end them first, before the quest will end.
One of the bandits is armed with an axe, which cannot be parried and will knock Geralt back. You should try to kill him first by befuddling him with Axii to give yourself a window to deal damage before killing him outright.
