The Witcher 3 quest For Fame and Glory gives us an excellent case study about why witchers kill monsters and normal humans pay. In the quest, Geralt helps a pair of Skelliger warriors remove a necrophage infestation from an old mine. While it is a routine job for Geralt, it is a life-or-death struggle for his companions.

This quest can be controller-through-wall frustrating because it fails the second a Skelliger dies. The quest isn't difficult because the monsters are dangerous, it's difficult because you have to keep a pair of ordinary and untrained humans from killing themselves with their own stupidity.

Starting For Fame And Glory

You can find the pair of Skelligers just south of Larvik on the island of Hindarsfjall in Skellige. They will tell Geralt that they are about to clear the nearby cave of its necrophage inhabitants. You can offer to help them for their safety and to start the quest.

Larvik is the same village where you meet Yennefer, during the quest The Last Wish.

The pair will enter the cave after the conversation, ready to enact their foolish plan. You must keep both of them alive while they clear two rooms of necrophages. The first room consists of several devourers and ghouls, while the second room has a lone alghoul.

If you kill the alghoul without losing an islander, they will thank you and pay you 60 crowns.

How To Keep The Warriors Alive

Odds are, you've looked this guide up because the two idiots die almost instantly, especially when playing at Death March. The trick to keeping them alive is to protect them from themselves and to kill everything before they can kill the Skelligers.

The most dangerous part of the first room is the devourers. These monsters hit harder and have more health than the ghouls and will explode into poison gas when killed. A single detonation can take out half a Skelliger's health bar. You should try to kill the devourers first, preferably before the Skelligers even get into the room.

You can cast Axii on the Skelligers before they enter the cave. This will buy you a few precious seconds to kill the devourers before any harm can befall the Skelligers.

If you have plenty of bombs, you should take a leaf from the first Modern Warfare's playbook and hurl bombs at the necrophages before they notice you. Mix Northern Wind, Grapeshot, and Dragon's Dream to immobilize, hurt, and incinerate the monsters long before a Skelliger sets foot in the room.

If nothing else, you should make liberal use of Northern Wind to freeze the monsters in place and prevent them from dealing damage.

The second room is much easier. Once again, rush into the room before the Skelligers can and start mercilessly attacking the alghoul before it can defend itself. Use Axii and Northern Wind to keep it from putting up a fight. If all goes well, it should die before it kills anyone.
