Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate - Which Permanent Upgrades To Go For First

As you can probably tell from looking at it, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate takes a lot of inspiration from Hades, from its combat style all the way to how it progressively tells a story. The most important similarity, though, is that, just like Hades, Splinted Fate is a roguelite and not a roguelike.

It's tough to pick a favourite, but some Turtles in Splintered Fate are better than others.
Posts 4Generally, the main thing that sets those two apart is that in a roguelite, players are able to permanently upgrade their character and make subsequent runs easier. This is true of Splintered Fate, which features two different ways to upgrade the Turtles and make their quest to rescue Shredder a lot easier.
Although Dragon Coins and Dreamer Coins are the main currencies needed to unlock upgrades in Splintered Fate, some of them will also require collectibles gathered from defeating bosses, which varies depending on what level of upgrade you're purchasing.
Dragon Coins Explained
The first way that players can improve the heroes in a half shell is with Dragon Coins, which are introduced in the first run. This currency can be used in the Sewer to upgrade the stats and abilities of all four Turtles. Dragon Coins are unlocked after defeating bosses and clearing rooms, or when purchased from the shopkeeper or selected as a reward for beating a room.
Dragon Coin upgrades are fairly generic compared to Dreamer Coins and the stats they improve are easy to understand, such as giving the player more health, higher attack damage, extra dash charges, and improving the critical and multi-hit chance. Thankfully, each upgrade purchased with Dragon Coins is applied to every character, which means you don't need to buy each one four times.
Dreamer Coins Explained
Dreamer Coins are a little more unique than Dragon Coins and unlocked for me after I'd beaten Karai for the first time. Once you've done that, a mysterious character will tell you that she's imbued the tapestry in the Sewer to allow you to spend Dreamer Coins on upgrades. Dreamer Coins are unlocked in the same ways as Dragon Coins, with the player often given a choice between them after clearing a room.
Dreamer Coins can also be used to upgrade Artefacts, so it's a little harder to build them up as they have more than one purpose.
While Dragon Coin upgrades are pretty simple, the same can't be said of Dreamer Coins. Some of the upgrades that can be purchased with it include luck-based ones such as there being a chance for Lucky Die to be dropped by bosses and upgrades that effect the economy like one that awards you more scrap at the start of the run to spend in the shop.
Which Dragon Coin Upgrades To Go For First
Let's start off with Dragon upgrades, as they're the most important ones in the game and the ones you'll be encountering the most. Here are the ones you should aim for first.
Health
This upgrade give you 10 percent more health every time you select it. Not only is that a big help towards completing runs, but it's also a relatively cheap upgrade that doesn't take many Dragon Coins. Savor The Flavour is a great pair to this boost, as it makes health recovery more effective each time overall.
Dash Charge
Dashing is a great help in Splintered Fate so selecting this upgrade is a no-brainer since it gives you one more dash use per cooldown. It gets very expensive after the first upgrade, but it's worth it.
Splinter's Revive
Looks like the first page of Dragon Upgrades are an easy win, huh? Selecting this upgrade will let you revive during a run one more time per selection, which should keep you in the fight a little longer against some of the tougher bosses. The Astral Rejuvenation upgrade is also worth unlocking, as it increases the amount of health you get when you revive.
Attack, Special, And Tool Damage
These three upgrades on the Technique page are worth bundling together, as each purchase will increase the specific damage type by 10 percent. These are cheap and relatively easy boosts to obtain, so you should aim to get them very early on in the game.
Critical Chance
Here's one that's especially good for anyone playing as Raph, as this upgrade increases your chance of getting a critical hit. It's helpful for all of the Turtles, though, and one to aim for as soon as possible. Pair it with the Critical Damage upgrade to make this even more effective.
Fast Abilities
This upgrade will make your special abilities charge faster, which is great since those are some of the Turtles' most powerful moves during a run. Well, except for Leonardo, that is.
Which Dreamer Coin Upgrades To Go For First
Now that the main Dragon Coin upgrades are out of the way, let's take a look at what your Dreamer Coins can be used for. It's worth noting that Dreamer Upgrades more frequently need collectibles obtained from defeating bosses, so they require a little more work put into them.
Perchance
This upgrade increases the likelihood that you'll be offered a Turtle Power as a reward for clearing out rooms. Since these are some of the best rewards in the game, it's a great choice to go for. You'll need Shredder's Blades as part of the upgrade, though, so it's not an easy one to obtain.
Do Over
Do-Over is less luck-based as it gives you an increaseable amount of Lucky Dice at the start of a run, which are used to re-roll your Room Rewards and shop offers. Again, you'll need Shredder's Claws, so these upgrades might take some time. Lucky Spoils is a good pair to this boost, as it'll increase the chance that bosses drop Lucky Dice.
Double Trouble
Perhaps my favourite upgrade out of all the Dreamer's offerings is Double Trouble, which increases the chance that you get to select two Turtle Powers in one go. It doesn't feel like it happens much, but it's worth it every time.
Running Start And Scrappy Bosses
Who doesn't love Scrap, right? This currency is used in the Shop, so starting off with Scrap and getting even more as a reward for beating bosses is an easy pick. Karai's currency is used in Scrappy Bosses, while Running Start just needs Dreamer Coins.
Pantheon's Blessings
Dragon and Dreamer Coins make the world go around in Splintered Fate, so this upgrade is essential as it offers 10 percent more of each when unlocked as a Room Reward. You'll need to defeat Karai and get her collectible for this one.
The rest of the Dreamer upgrades are pretty situational, or require you to defeat powerful Gaunlet challenges to have a chance of unlocking. Some of them can be helpful, but you're better off spending most of the Dreamer Coins you get on upgrading Artefacts when you've put a bit of time into the ones mentioned above.
