Summary

  • The Switch 2 version of Split Fiction will technically be playable on the original Switch.
  • Those playing on Switch 2 will be able to play locally with a Switch owner via the new console's GameShare function.
  • As is the case with Split Fiction's Friend Pass, only one person needs to own the game for two of you to play.

EA and Hazelight have revealed more details about what to expect from Split Fiction on the Nintendo Switch 2. While more of the new details are run-of-the-mill, like when pre-orders will go live and how much the co-op game is going to cost on the Switch 2, a more surprising reveal was that you will be able to play it with someone on an original Switch.

A new blog post from EA has revealed owners of Split Fiction on the Switch 2 will be able to play through the game alongside an OG Switch owner using the new console's GameShare function. The Switch 2's GameShare will allow two people to play a single copy of Split Fiction on two devices via a local wireless connection, so while using the same WiFi. However, the blog adds, "this 'other player' can be not only a Nintendo Switch 2 owner but a Nintendo Switch owner as well."

Pre-orders for the Switch 2 version of Split Fiction will open April 24, 2025, and it will cost $49.99

That means even if no one else in your house has a Switch 2, you will be able to play Split Fiction with them locally via their Switch. You will, of course, also be able to play locally on the same Switch 2 if you like, but only when the console is docked. The ability to use GameShare with a regular Switch means you will also be able to play the game together in handheld on your respective consoles.

Split Fiction Won't Be Released On The Original Switch

But There Will Be A Way To Play It On Nintendo's Older Hardware

The Switch 2's GameShare functionality was shown off during the Nintendo Direct earlier this month. While only a Switch 2 can do the sharing, the games can be shared locally with both Switch 2 and regular Switch consoles. The surprising part of the Split Fiction news is the regular Switch part. Split Fiction will not be launching on the original Switch, hence the ability to play it on older hardware via GameShare being a welcome surprise.

If you plan on picking up Split Fiction on Switch 2 but don't have anyone to play it with locally, the Friend Pass system implemented across other platforms will be in effect. Not only does that mean you will be able to play Split Fiction with someone else anywhere in the world, even if they don't have the game - or if you don't have the game, if they do - but it supports cross-play. You won't be able to play online with someone on an original Switch, but even if your potential Split Fiction partner doesn't have a Switch 2, they will be able to play the game alongside you on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
