Praetors are the generals and seneschals available to Archfiends in Solium Infernum. While expensive, they're key to winning battles between Legions or settling disputes for Prestige by fighting duels. They have a high mortality rate, since failure is severely punished in Hell, but with the right Praetors assisting you, your path to the throne is assured.

7 Games Set In Hell

In these games, you spend your time among flames and demons.

The Praetors available in a given match will depend on the whims of the Bazaar, but if you have the Tokens on hand to bid on these particularly fiendish devils, you should go for it.

10 Morax

Base Cost: 7 Souls, 13 Ichor

In demonology, Morax is a diabolical patron of mortal sorcerers, offering mystical boons and powerful familiars to those that enter into a pact with her. As a result, her magical powers are unmatched.

When Morax leads a Legion or a Place of Power in combat, she grants +5 Infernal and allows her charges to strike twice in the Infernal phase. However, since the Infernal Phase is usually last, it can be difficult to get her armies to survive long enough to take advantage of her strengths.

The Stygian Guard have decent survivability and a strong starting Infernal stat; they're a good choice for Morax if you can afford them.

9 Thammuz

Base Cost: 4 Souls, 7 Ichor

Thammuz - sometimes called Tammuz - isn't actually a demon at all, but a Mesopotamian fertility god. In Solium Infernum, he's cast as an enforcer, the mere threat of whom puts to rest any thought of dissent by the denizens of Hell.

Thammuz can be a strong early pick for Archfiends whose starting Legions are strong in Melee. He doesn't offer any stat bonuses, but when commanding a Legion he makes sure that the Melee Phase happens first. He can also be assigned to a Place of Power, where he'll generate a Token for three Souls with every Offering.

Souls are among the more common types of Tribute, so having Thammuz in your service lets you consolidate Offering picks and get more of the rarer types.

8 Astarte

Base Cost: 5 Souls, 10 Ichor

Astarte is the Greek name for the Mesopotamian goddess of love and war, Ishtar. Like Tammuz and many other pagan deities, she was lumped together with demons in the mythology of Christian Europe as the centuries wore on.

In Solium Infernum, Astarte provides a decent bonus of +4 Melee, and ensures that the Ranged Phase of combat will happen last when she participates. She makes a great means of clearing the way for Melee and Infernal-focused Legions to strike with their best stats.

7 Orias

Base Cost: 7 Souls, 12 Ichor

Orias is traditionally portrayed as a master of astrology. In Solium Infernum, he's an all-devouring glutton who watches the Abyss at the edge of Hell, on the lookout for... something.

Orias can be useful overseeing a Place of Power, where he'll add a three-Ichor Token to every Offering, but his real strength lies in his combat prowess. He allows his troops to attack twice in the Melee Phase, making him a useful addition to most Legions.

6 Naphula

Base Cost: 8 Souls, 12 Ichor

Naphula is listed in Ars Goetia as a Great Duchess of Hell, but according to Solium Infernum's in-game lore she has been demoted to the rank of Praetor. She's not happy about it, but there's not much she can do for now besides ensure that the Archfiend she serves becomes the next Dark Majesty.

Naphula provides a +3 Melee bonus in combat, but her real strength comes from her Block Stratagems ability. Preventing an opponent from using the Stratagems that they've spent turns formulating helps win fights and reduce your rivals' overall efficiency. She's a must if you have a Wrath-focused Archfiend like Astaroth or Erszebet as a neighbor.

5 Eligos

Base Cost: 2 Souls, 4 Ichor

Eligos sees the future where military matters are concerned, making his services sought by mortal and demonic warlords alike. He provides a small +2 Ranged bonus, but causes the Melee Phase to happen last in any fight where he is involved.

The preponderence of Melee-focused Legions in the early game, coupled with Eligos' relatively low cost, make him a priority purchase if he's available within the first ten turns or so. Just be sure to bid higher than his starting price - there's sure to be competition for him at the auction!

4 Decarabia

Base Cost: 10 Souls, 11 Ichor

Decarabia is known to mortals primarily for his shapeshifting abilities, but in the game's depiction of Hell he's something of an engineer. He's described as a master of siegecraft, and that's reflected in his abilities.

Decarabia provides +3 Ranged to his Legion or Place of Power, and allows them to strike twice in the Ranged Phase. Since the Ranged Phase is usually first, he has the potential to take out an enemy before they have a chance to strike back.

3 Xuul

Base Cost: 2 Souls, 7 Ichor

Xuul doesn't appear in any classic texts on demonology, instead entering the modern lexicon as an ancient Sumerian entity in the 1984 film Ghostbusters. However, our friends over at ScreenRant point out that a creature similar to Xuul's appearance in the film may have existed before the dawn of humanity.

Xuul isn't much good in combat, adding only +1 Melee when she fights. However, her Unholy Crucible ability makes her one of the best stewards for your hard-won Places of Power. As long as she's assigned to such a landmark, your Offerings will always include an additional Token for two Darkness and two Hellfire.

2 Xaphan

Base Cost: 8 Souls, 11 Ichor

Xaphan was one of the first to join the rebellion against Heaven, and is tasked with keeping the fires of Hell burning for eternity. The demons of Solium Infernum know him for his excessive cruelty, even by fiendish standards.

Xaphan packs a nasty surprise for anyone who picks a fight with him; not only does he grant a +3 Infernal Bonus, but he also forces the Infernal Phase of combat to happen first. At the head of a magically-inclined Legion, he's very hard to beat.

It's worth bidding on Xaphan just to prevent others from recruiting him; if you do, you can always put him in a Place of Power to get an additional Token for three Hellfire with each Offering.

1 Mulciber

Base Cost: 6 Souls, 9 Ichor

According to Paradise Lost, Mulciber was the architect who built Pandaemonium, the capital city of Hell. His skill is famed throughout the underworld, and his services are in high demand.

While the in-game art for Mulciber depicts him as female-presenting, his lore text uses he/him pronouns so we'll follow suit here.

While Mulciber is the founder of the Infernal Engineers, he makes an especially devious general for any Legion if you're willing to take some risks. Whenever Mulciber wins a battle, any Artifacts held by his opponent are claimed by his Archfiend rather than destroyed.

When he's not out stealing Artifacts, Mulciber should be assigned to a Placc of Power, where his Accursed Genius ability will add a Token for two Souls and two Darkness to all Offerings.
