Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is perhaps the biggest skateboarding video game series of the last twenty years. It gave both skaters and non-skaters the power to shred on a skateboard in ways you never knew were possible. It was also a great way to introduce a wider audience to the world of professional skateboarding.

We were bound to see a remaster of the THPS games and, in both 2020 and 2025, we got just that. New features were added to the games as well as new skaters, including some celebrity appearances like Jack Black. With the massive success of the remasters, here are some other skateboarding games that should get the same treatment.

Skate Or Die!

A Commodore Classic

Believe it or not, there have been other skateboarding games made before the Tony Hawk series and Skate or Die is one of those titles. This game was released over a decade before THPS in 1987 for the Commodore 64.

Featuring four original playable characters, you can take part in five different events, including a downhill race, pool jousting, and a high jump on a half pipe. A remaster could pave the way for some major upgrades in both the gameplay and graphics departments for a new generation.

Shaun White Skateboarding

Fight Evil Through The Power Of Skateboarding

Shaun White is one of the most recognized names in snowboarding and skateboarding, even being mentored by Tony Hawk himself. It comes as no surprise that the 2010 release of Shaun White Skateboarding is a sequel to his original snowboarding game.

You have the ability to customize your skater and help save a city from evil simply by doing tricks around different areas and influencing people and items around you. It’s a unique take on the genre and would make for a great duology remaster with its prequel game.

The Simpsons Skateboarding

One Of The Worst Simpsons Games Ever Released

Fans of The Simpsons have been asking for a remaster of the beloved Hit & Run game for years, but there’s another game that should be added to that list: The Simpsons Skateboarding.

This game wasn’t the most well-received when it came out for a variety of reasons, but a remaster could fix all of that. In this game, Springfield has been turned into a skate park, and you can go around skating in various iconic areas from the show. You can choose from nine different characters, and unlock others, and play in a few modes, like freeskate, a trick contest, or a skate fest.

Thrasher Presents Skate And Destroy

Paved The WayThrough Its Unique Controls

If you’re a huge fan of skateboarding, or even if you’re not, there’s a good chance that you’ve heard of Thrasher. It’s the biggest skateboarding magazine and brand, and it only makes sense to have a video game based on it.

In Thrasher Presents Skate And Destroy, you play as one of six fictional characters skating through twelve levels. These levels allow you to show off your skills and try to gain sponsorships from decks and clothing while trying not to get caught by a security officer or dog. The game was extremely well-received thanks to its simulation gameplay but had a steep learning curve for its controls.

Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground

A Combination Of Old School And Modern Tony Hawk Games

Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground is the ninth game in the series but one that feels like one of the earlier games. It mixes the gameplay of the originals while also adding new features and making the game feel modern.

There are nine levels to the game that span across three cities: Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. You skate around in different Story Modes and even have the ability to try to beat high scores or play in the classic mode. This game added three Nail the Trick modes that focused on tricks, board grabs, and manuals.

Tony Hawk’s Project 8

Battle Over 200 Skaters To Make Tony Hawk's Team

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Tony Hawk announced he would build a skate team with the best eight skaters in your city, and they would all have to compete for it? Well, that is exactly the premise of Tony Hawk’s Project 8.

This was the first game to feature a new engine for the series on the PS3 and Xbox 360 that allowed for open world gameplay with skate parks and hidden areas instead of selecting different levels. You could play as 45 different skaters, each with their own unique styles and animations, rack up hospital bills, and create new moves.

Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland

Feels Like An Open World Game Thanks To Its Level Design

Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland was the first game in the series to make its levels all feel like one consistent level through its story. This made the game feel fresh while adding new features that really made it stand out.

You play as a delinquent who moves to Hollywood and goes through various challenges, all leading to the culmination of trying to help save a skate ranch for one of the characters. You could style your skater with a whole new wardrobe, play as one of the pros or secret skaters, and even pick up a bike and perform freestyle BMX tricks.

Skate 2 + 3

Expands On The Success Of The Original Skate Game

Skate 2 and 3 are the followups to the original game, with the second being set five years after the first and expanding on its events. The third game continues the player's story but also focuses on a new one with you building up a new skateboarding team.

While we could see all three games remastered and bundled together as one, like the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, it would be great to see each one given attention for its own remaster or even combining the second and third games like THPS 1 + 2. This would be a great way to give gamers who have never experienced these games a perfect introduction, especially with how popular Skate 3 is.

Skate

A Video Game That Makes It Feel Like You're Really Skateboarding

Skate was the wildly successful game that took the genre by storm when it was released and for good reason. It was completely different from the Tony Hawk games and its “flick it” controls really stood out, making the game feel more realistic.

What helped propel the game’s success was its almost realistic simulation of skateboarding and its customization options for your character. You can skate around on a huge map completing different challenges, make a name for yourself, and even go against pros in the game. You can also freeskate as your character, a pro, or secret unlockable characters.

Tony Hawk’s Underground 1 + 2

One Of The Most Popular Games Besides The Pro Skater Entries

Tony Hawk’s Underground was one of the biggest games in the Tony Hawk series because it took what the previous games were known for and added something that was completely new. In the previous games, you could play as a pro skater, but this was the first game to allow you to make your own skater.

What else helped launch this game off the ground was the fact you could explore levels while performing tricks and even getting off your board, which the other games didn't allow. You get to play as a skater who impresses a pro skater and finds yourself trying to become one. The second game focuses on your character in a contest between Team Tony Hawk and Team Bam Margera. A bundled remaster for these games would be great to see and continue the theme like the THPS remasters.
