Christophe Gans, who directed the original Silent Hill movie, is returning after 18 years with a new instalment.

Dubbed Return to Silent Hill, it's an adaptation of the second game in which James Sunderland ventures to the namesake town in search of his wife, only to fall into an industrial, grungy alternate reality plagued by monsters. However, it was revealed last year that it will involve a new character called Jacob Crane, so the plot might be slightly different to what we know.

There was a second Silent Hill movie released in 2012, helmed by director M. J. Bassett. It had a stacked cast with Kit Harington, Sean Bean, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Malcolm McDowell to name a few, but it was received far worse than its predecessor.

As reported by Variety, Gans has revealed our first look at the film's take on Pyramid Head, the most iconic of the series' villains. We see him behind rusty, bent iron bars brandishing his giant knife, standing amidst the corridors of the Otherworld. It's a lot more faithful than Revelation's take.

Return To Silent Hill Reveals Cast At Cannes Film Festival

James Sunderland will be played by Jeremy Irvine (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, War Horse, Treadstone), while Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Killjoys) has been cast as his wife Mary. The script is being penned by Gans himself alongside Sandra Vo-Anh (Beauty and the Beast 2014) and William Josef Schneider (The Crow 2024, 15-40).

The official synopsis states that the story begins "when a mysterious letter from [Mary] calls [James] back to Silent Hill, [where] he finds a once-recognisable town transformed by an unknown evil. While James desperately searches for Mary, he encounters terrifying creatures and begins to unravel the mystery of what happened to the town.

"But as he descends deeper into the darkness, the secrets he uncovers lead to a horrifying truth, and James finds himself struggling to hold on long enough to save his one true love."

Return to Silent Hill isn't the only new rendition of Silent Hill 2 we're getting. Bloober Team announced two years ago that it's remaking the game for PS5. We haven't heard much about it since its reveal, but we did get our first look at gameplay in January.

Bloober admitted in April that the remake is its "most important test" yet and that it's "excited and confident" about where the game is at.

There's still no release date, but it was rated in South Korea back in March, so it's likely near the end of development at least.
