Silent Hill 2 Remake Has Altered The Original's Red Square Save Points

Summary
- Silent Hill 2 Remake is making a very subtle, but thematic change to the original game's iconic save points.
- Originally, Silent Hill 2's red square save points would feature a stock image of James Sunderland on a red background, but the remake has altered this slightly.
- Instead, the save points will give you a red POV looking at James Sunderland, almost as if something within the save point is watching him.
Silent Hill is one of many horror games that have pretty iconic save points. Resident Evil has its typewriters, Alien: Isolation has its emergency phones, and Left 4 Dead has its bright red safe room doors, letting you know that a safe haven is right around the corner. Silent Hill 2 is no exception, littering the titular town with bright red squares that players can use to save their games.

Posts 3Just like other save points, they're a sight for sore eyes, and their bright glow pierces the town's thick fog to make sure players notice them. Once you interact with them, you're greeted with a red screen that's almost too bright, which features nothing but protagonist James Sunderland's head staring back at you. Silent Hill 2's upcoming remake has kept these unique save points relatively intact.
However, one very slight change has been made to the save points, though you could argue it's a very thematic one. In a gameplay stream of Silent Hill 2 Remake, broadcast by a Japanese YouTube channel called 2 Bro Entertainment, we can see one of the game's save points being used at the 44 minute and 50 second mark.
Silent Hill 2 Remake Has Made A Neat Change To Save Points
First spotted by Reddit user TheR-Person, it appears as though each save point will now display a POV look at James Sunderland in the location he's in, rather than just a stock image like the original. We can also see that James is moving while the game is being saved, almost as if he's being watched by something inside the red square itself.
If you're a Silent Hill head, then you'll know just how thematic of a change this is. We've known for a while that there's a hidden meaning behind Silent Hill 2's red squares, but the original creators have always been tight-lipped about what it is, choosing to leave it up to the player's interpretation.
A popular theory is that these squares are meant to represent the physical manifestations of James' subconscious, as there's a room that includes nine red squares towards the end of the game, and nine named monsters that prowl around in the game. If they do represent monsters, then having a red square stare back at James would be a subtle way to pour fuel on that particular fire.
