This guide will tell you everything that we know about Sea Of Thieves' new Sea Forts.
PostsWhile some of these tattoos are freely unlocked by completing quests, others are locked behind time-sensitive events and battle passes. If you are curious about which tattoos are the best for your character, then check out the list below.
Whenever you start a new game of Sea of Thieves, there will be 16 different tattoo styles that are available completely for free in the character customization. Since these styles are relatively simple and automatically unlocked, we will not be including them in this list.
10 Pirate Scribes Tattoo Set
The Pirate Scribes Tattoo set features a large scroll and ink pen on your chest, with paper tendrils that travel down your pirate's arms. While the large piece of paper in the center of your character's chest is not exactly visually appealing, the arm tattoos are incredibly unique and distinctive.
To unlock this tattoo set, you will first need to complete all the Pirate Scribes Commendations, then purchase it from Umbra's shop. In Sea of Thieves, Commendations are essentially achievements, so you will have to beat all five of these challenges to unlock the tattoo.
9 Constellation Tattoo Set
The Constellation Tattoo Set is inspired by the stars that shine in the night sky, which sailors have historically used to guide them while traveling at night. Specifically, this tattoo will cover your pirate with drawings of nautical star signs across your arms, stomach, and back.
If you want to use this tattoo on your character, then it can be automatically added to your inventory after completing the Stars of a Thief commendation. Stars of a Thief is the fourth tall tale in the Shores of Gold arc, so you'll have to play through this quest before you can change your character and apply this tattoo.
8 Jewels Of The Sea Tattoo Set
While other tattoos may focus on turning your pirate into an imposing force to be reckoned with, the Jewels Of The Sea Tattoo Set is focused on decorating your skin with undersea life. Equipping this tattoo will cover you with different species of fish and coral, transforming your entire body into a walking fish tank.

Sunken Merfolk Statues are a helpful way to retrieve coral treasures from within the new Siren Shrines. Here's how to use them.
PostsUnfortunately, this tattoo was only available for a limited amount of time during the Jewels of the Deep event, requiring you to earn 400 favors. While there is no way to unlock old event items currently, the game may eventually add a shop that allows you to unlock this aquatic tattoo.
7 Hungering Tattoo Set
The Hungering Tattoo Set is another example of a fantastic tattoo design that is sadly locked behind a limited-time event. During the Hungering Deep Event, reading all of Merrick's journals allowed you to freely equip this tattoo.
The tattoo itself is relatively simple, placing a large jaw on your chest that looks like it is about to take a bite out of your flesh. While the tattoo is not available for purchase, it may become available in future updates.
6 Serpent Scale Tattoo Set
If you have hunted, cooked, and delivered a lot of snakes in Sea of Thieves, then chances are you have unlocked the Serpent Scale Tattoo Set. This tattoo features two components: snake scales on your right shoulder, and a snake that twirls around your entire arm.
The Serpent Scale Tattoo is a fantastic piece of ink since it is completely free and offers a much more intricate design than other basic tattoos. Remember, if you want to unlock this tattoo set, it can be purchased from the general clothing shop after you deliver 50 pieces of cooked snake.
5 Forsaken Ashes Tattoo Set
The Forsaken Ashes Tattoo Set is another tattoo that can be obtained completely for free, so long as you are up to some serious exploring. This tattoo features a large volcano imprinted on your back and a chain that wraps around your arm and collarbone.
To obtain the Forsaken Ashes Tattoo set, you must discover all the islands in the Devil's Roar region, a volcanic area in the southeastern section of the map. Also, you will need to discover the remains of the Forsaken Shores Alliance crewmates.
4 Shroudbreaker Tattoo Set
Inspired by the Ancient Americas, the Shroudbreaker Tattoo Set is one of the few tattoos in the game that features multiple colors at once. Specifically, the key feature of this tattoo is a large mask etched across your back, made out of pink ink.
The tattoo also has designs that spread across your pirate's shoulders and arms, which converge in the center of your chest and form a pink skull. The Shroudbreaker Tattoo Set was previously unlocked during Season One by purchasing the Battle Pass and reaching Renown Level 16.
3 Tattoo Of The Ashen Dragon
Instead of the classic black tattoos, the Tattoo Of The Ashen Dragon is a light red that stretches across your pirate's right arm. This tattoo, and the entire item set, is inspired by one of Captain Flameheart's ships, which were manned by fantastical Ashen Lords.

PostsThe red portion of this tattoo is modeled after an Eastern aesthetic, turning your right arm into a dragon while your other arm only contains two smaller pieces of black ink. This tattoo set can be purchased from the general clothing shop at any time, making it incredibly easy to get.
2 Tattoos Of The Sirens' Wrath
The Tattoos Of The Sirens' Wrath is a tattoo set that pairs perfectly with the various scars available in the game. This tattoo covers your entire body, adding tendrils of ink down your spine, arms, and legs.
The entire tattoo merges in the central chest area, with a large diamond that has four slices through it. The Tattoos Of The Sirens' Wrath were earned by purchasing the Season Four Battle Pass and reaching Renown level 26.
1 Umbra's Chronicle
Inspired by an NPC shopkeeper named Umbra, the Umbra's Chronicle tattoo set is a replica of the tattoos that decorate her body. This tattoo design completely covers your entire pirate in a variety of tattoos, such as a large skull on your stomach and tendrils traveling across your shoulders.
The tattoo can be purchased from Umbra after you complete the Chronicler of Legend commendation. This requires you to uncover all 12 Legends of the Sea, which are books scattered across the entire map, making this tattoo a long process to unlock.
