Naming things can be difficult, especially in a game like Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, where you frequently name the new animals to join your farm. Naming a dog and a horse is one thing; an entire flock of chickens is another.

You don't have to figure them all out on your own, though. We've come up with a selection of naming conventions and themes that will more than suit your needs. Each option will offer a rich wellspring of names from cultural and historical backgrounds. Many of them even have subvarieties, allowing you to differentiate between the different animal types while still staying on theme.

9 After The Locals

One of the most noticeable differences between the remake and the original is that most of the residents of Forgotten Valley have new or adjusted names. Who says they get to be the only ones with these names, though? Gordy would make a great goat name, and Molly would make for a fantastic name for a sheep.

This also introduces the comedic miscommunication with friends when you have to differentiate between "Vesta" and "Human Vesta." Besides, we love the idea of having a male chicken named after Matthew since he's a complete [REMOVED BY EDITOR].

8 French Renaissance

Is sticking to the local population too limiting? Why not go for an entire historical age, then? Perhaps the French Renaissance, where drama was nigh, and reputations were everything. Egelina, Renilla, and Beatrix make for tremendously regal and fashionable names for a cow. They can waltz about the field while gossipping about seeing Balthazar the sheep talking to Michault the rooster.

It doesn't need to be this specific land and time. You could draw from Elizabethan, Victorian, Biblical names, and more. You could even have a different era for each animal. Your entire flock of chickens could be Colonial Americans. Jedidiah always did lay the best eggs.

7 Performing Musical Artists

This particular option is best when you know precisely how many of each animal you plan on having. Do you have five cows? Each one can be a member of the Spice Girls. Only two sheep? Why not Thomas and Guy, of Daft Punk fame? With one chicken to act as Manager, you could have the entire ensemble of the Kpop group BTS living in your chicken coop, eating feed you threw on the ground.

If group organization is a concern, there's a massive list of solo artists out there that you can pull from. Perhaps each type of animal can be a different genre. Pop for the sheep, rock for the cows, and country for the chickens. Nothing says "happy farm," like Keith Urban taking a nap next to Elton John.

6 Any Fantasy RPG Adventure

Enough with the human names. Why not draw from the realm of fantasy? Roleplaying and adventure games provide entire landscapes full of different creatures, civilizations, and characters to draw from. You can use existing characters or simply follow the naming convention of that race or group. This can be from whatever game you prefer, like The Witcher 3, Dragon Age, Final Fantasy, and more.

Take the Legend of Zelda, for example. The cows can be named after Gorons, chickens after the Rito, sheep after the Gerudo, and goats after the Zonai. With Epona as your horse and a dog named Wolf Link, you're only a cat named Zelda away from having the entire cast.

5 Magic: The Gathering Cards

If there's any single piece of media with far too many names to pull from, it's the popular battle trading card game Magic: The Gathering. MTG has produced literally thousands of cards over the years, drawing inspiration from everything you can imagine. It's no surprise, then, that there are ox, sheep, goat, and chicken cards you can look to for naming ideas, all of which with extremely cool names.

Ironhoof, Chinderhorn, and Goldenhide are all amazing names for a cow. Stix, Breena, and Eesha are all powerful bird warriors that would make for excellent chicken titles.

4 D&D Names

Perhaps that's a little too categorical. Instead, why not look to the other Wizards of the Coast product, Dungeons & Dragons? This is a more freeform format with established rules for developing names for the different fictional races throughout the fantasy landscape of the Forgotten Realms.

Blessing your sheep with Dwarven names is the greatest honor you could bestow upon them. Meanwhile, Halfing names could be a perfect fit for your chickens. There are official data tables for creating these names too. Referencing them can help ensure that you're keeping to the theme in an official capacity. Go forth on an adventure, Tealeaf and Fargrim!

3 Defunct Companies

One great source of silly names are corporations and other public-facing businesses. They're the only names to be built around entire marketing departments, after all. But why stop there? Why not focus specifically on businesses that have gone under? There's something fun about referencing icons of an age now passed, even if that age was only a decade or two ago.

As fun as it is to name animals things like RadioShack, Pier1, Toys-R-Us, and Borders, we do admit there is something a bit dour about naming your livestock after something that tried and failed. Especially if you start to introduce competitive brands still in operation. Nothing will put more fear in a cow named Blockbuster than a newly arrived Star Cow named Netflix.

2 Snack Foods

This plays on the same recognizability as the last one while replacing the failure with flavor! Snack food products can be a fun and playful way to differentiate your animals. Products like Twizzlers, Gobstoppers, and Skittles are good examples. Just avoid calling any of your cows "Milkdud." That might come across as rude.

Alternatively, you could opt for generic food items like Popcorn, Pretzels, and Salsa. You could even aim for dairy items relevant to the animal, with cows named Sour Cream and Ice Cream. They're fun, easy to identify, and add a bit of personality to each animal.

1 Gamer Usernames

This is a video game, after all. Why not let your animals live a gamer's life? There's a certain consistency in the usernames we use for things like our Xbox Gamertag or PSN account name. These can be things like multiple Xs on both ends to a name to 'leetspeak' variations of words. Is that a cow, or is that C0wm4n47?

You could draw from other gaming-centric sources, as well. Things like Twitch Chat emote titles would make for entertaining names. Goats are GOAT, and sheep are pretty Pogchamp, after all. You're never more than one Steam Forum page from finding a new name for your livestock.
