There is actually a lot that goes into building an outpost. A lot of things have to go right in order for your extractor to work and your power to be activated. This guide will detail how to place objects in build mode properly.

How To Rotate And Place Items In Build Mode

The first thing you want to do is make sure you are in build mode by pulling out your scanner (F or LB) and pressing R on PC, X on Xbox, and Square on PS. With build mode activated, you can either press TAB on PC, B on Xbox, or Circle on PS to scan through items to purchase or select an already placed object.

Placement of objects is important. Specifically, the extractor. The extractor will not work if it is not on top of a resource. You can check this by opening up your scanner and checking if the ground underneath is being marked as a resource like Nickel.

With an object selected, you can drag it around the world by simply moving your mouse or thumbstick. To rotate an object, click both the left and right mouse buttonsas you were to aim and shootor use the left and right triggers on the controller. Confirm the placement of the object with E on the PC, A on Xbox, and X on PS.

How To Drag Items

Outside of build mode and setting up outposts, you can actually drag objects within the world. If you want to get an item out of a tough place or play with a ragdoll body, you will be able to drag it around and play with it.

All you have to do to drag an item outside of build mode is hold down E with the keyboard while looking at an item. Instead of collecting the item in your inventory, it will be picked up in front of you and float. You can deselect E and it will still be floating in front of you. You may rotate the object with the left and right clicks. Drop the item by pressing E again.

On controller, you will have to hold down A on Xbox or X on PS to pick up an item in the world. Rotate the item with the left and right triggers.
