One of the best parts of Starfield is getting to play however you see fit. Whether you choose to be the upstanding hero everyone needs or dabble in a bit of thievery, you can have it all. So long as you don't get caught, you can get away with just about any crime–especially if you hide the evidence before security sees it.

After you've accumulated a lot of stolen valuables, you'll be looking to drop them off and lighten the load. Stolen goods can be sold, but only to the right vendor, but it's not immediately clear who can help.

How To Get Stolen Items

In the simplest terms, stealing in Starfield is done by taking items that don't belong to you.

Whether you enter a store and sneak around to grab the merchandise or you pickpocket citizens of the Settled Systems, you can acquire hot items wherever you go.

The problem comes from getting caught, where the items will be confiscated, and you'll have to pay a bounty.

If you manage to get away or go unnoticed with your theft, you'll want to sell those items and free up valuable space in your inventory.

Where To Store Stolen Items

If you're not able to sell the items right away and you don't want to drop them, you can store them instead. You can trade gear with a follower to make them hold onto the items indefinitely.

You can also stash stolen items in containers on your ship or at outposts.

Where To Sell Stolen Items

When you're ready to tell stolen items, you can't take them to just any vendor. The red stolen tag on the item marks it in your inventory, and most vendors won't take it.

However, across the Settled Systems, there is one business that prides itself on discretion: The Trade Authority. As the self-proclaimed authority on all trade, they are no strangers to handling stolen items.

It's not immediately clear that you need to sell stolen goods to the Trade Authority, but the side quest The Art Dealer gives you a clear hint that not all business that passes through is legitimate.

The Trade Authority is spread throughout the Settled Systems, even on some starstations. One of the earliest vendors you can find is Zoe Kaminski in The Well, who will happily take hot merchandise off your hands.

How To Launder Stolen Items

If you've stolen an item you want to keep for yourself (but not risk losing if living a life of crime), then you can launder it at the Trade Authority as well.

First, sell it to the vendor from the Sell menu, then return to the Buy menu. Select the Buy Back option to repurchase the items without the stolen tag.

Exiting out of the vendor menu entirely will remove the Buy Back option, so be careful to do all your work in one smooth transaction.

Without the stolen tag on your items, they're as good as yours. They won't be confiscated by security, and you're the only one who will know the truth–minus the Trade Authority employee.
