While some of these items are really just decoration with no further purpose, plenty of items you’ll find can be used for crafting. Drilling Rigs are one of the many items you’ll come across, and here is what they are used for, and where to get more.

What Are Drilling Rigs For?

Drilling Rigs in Starfield are a rare manufactured component that can be used in crafting. They have a regular mass of 5.00, so stocking up on them will require plenty of storage space.

When it comes to building outposts, Drilling Rigs are used in the construction of resource extractors. If you want to build an extractor to mine any kind of solid resource such as Uranium, you’ll need to have a Drilling Rig ready.

How To Get Drilling Rigs

Right off the bat, Drilling Rigs can be found in random locations as you explore different planets and the human outposts on them. You can often loot them from different structures you find, such as the storerooms of abandoned hangars or lab facilities.

Purchase Drilling Rigs At Shops

Another way to find Drilling Rigs is through different vendors that sell them. While any vendor’s stock can vary based on the day and how high your character level is, there are some vendors to check out more often if you’re in the market for Drilling Rigs:

  • Outland in the commercial district New Atlantis on Jemison.
  • Sieghart’s Outfitters in Neon on Volii Alpha.
  • Clint’s Collectibles in Gagarin Landing on Gagarin.

You can always find a chair or bench to wait 24 to 48 hours in order to reset a vendor’s inventory.

Trade Drilling Rigs With Ships

Every once in a while, you'll enter the orbit of a planet or moon and find another ship flying by. If you hail these random ships, you may be able to engage in a small bit of trade. Check out their available inventory in case they have any Drilling Rigs to buy.

Craft Drilling Rigs

If you're having trouble finding Drilling Rigs to loot or buy, it is possible to craft Drilling Rigs on your own. The process isn't immediately available, and requires a heavy focus of skill points into the Science skill tree.

In order to craft Drilling Rigs, you will need a Compound Fabricator. This requires the Outpost Engineering skill, in addition to reaching the second level of Manufacturing through research.

Ultimately, you can build the Compound Fabricator at one of your outposts and connect it to a power source. With this, you'll be well on your way to crafting as many Drilling Rigs as you can handle. Of course, you'll need to have the following components to craft Drilling Rigs:

  • Tungsten
  • Reactive Gauge
  • Lubricant
