Enter The Dark Shrine Of Night Terrors. A very foreboding name in an otherwise peaceful game. What is this Shrine? What does it change about the game? This guide will dive into what this Shrine is, what it does, and how to activate it.

How To Find The Dark Shrine Of Night Terrors

Mod used in this image: UI Info Suite 2 by Annosz

Before you can unlock and activate the Shrine of Night Terrors, it will help you to first know where it is and how to get to it. Once you've either rebuilt the Community Center or gone the Joja Route, you'll want to head up north, to The Mountains.

Keep going north, above Robin's Shop, heading toward the Spa; the first time you enter that area after finishing up the Community Center business, a cutscene will trigger. The Wizard will be standing in the top right corner of the map and ask for your help retrieving his magic ink through a quest called Dark Talisman.

After retrieving the Talisman from the sewers, you'll be able to unlock a teleportation pad that leads you to a swampy area. Blocking the path is a Goblin, triggering one more quest, called the Goblin Problem.

You will have had to donate 60 items to the Museum to unlock the sewers. You can't collect the Dark Talisman without hitting this milestone first.

This Goblin Henchman will need to be bribed with void mayonnaise, and then he will rush up ahead, unlocking the Witch's Hut. You can now enter and, along with collecting the magic ink for The Wizard, you will now be able to access and use the three shrines inside, including The Dark Shrine Of Night Terrors, which is the one on the right.

How To Use The Dark Shrine Of Night Terrors

Mod used in this image: UI Info Suite 2 by Annosz

The short answer: The Dark Shrine Of Night Terrors can allow or disable monsters spawning on your farm at night. For most players, when they start their save file, monsters will automatically not spawn on the farm.

However, the Wilderness Farm will have monsters that spawn. Additionally, there is an optional setting you can toggle before you start your save file that will allow monsters on your farm, no matter which layout you choose.

How Do You Activate Or Deactivate The Dark Shrine?

Mod used in this image: UI Info Suite 2 by Annosz

It doesn't matter if you start your game with or without monsters spawning, you can activate and deactivate the shrine as many times as you like. But it's at a cost since the Shrine demands a cooked item instead of gold.

You will have to offer the Shrine a Strange Bun to change this monster-spawning option. If you decide later you'd like to reverse your decision, all you have to do is bake or find another Strange Bun and present it to the Shrine again.

Once you've unlocked the Witch's Hut, you can return to it at any time. The Henchman will not reappear to block your path.

How Do You Get A Strange Bun?

Mod used in this image: UI Info Suite 2 by Annosz

There are several ways to obtain a Strange Bun:

  • Cooking (Recipe Gifted By Shane after seven hearts)
  • Krobus' Shop (Randomly on Saturdays)
  • Stardrop Saloon (Rotating Stock)
  • Garbage Can Outside The Saloon
  • The Traveling Cart
  • Shadow Brute Drop
  • Spider Drop

There is a four percent chance for both the Shadow Brute and the Spider to drop a Strange Bun.

If you are going to cook a Strange Bun, you will need one wheat flour, one periwinkle, and one void mayonnaise. You will also need either a cookout kit or to have upgraded your home at least once.

Benefits

Mod used in this image: UI Info Suite 2 by Annosz

There aren't many benefits to having monsters spawn on your farm, as you still gain experience from killing these monsters, and they can count toward some of the Monster Eradication Goals. But the combat experience you gain on your farm is less than killing these creatures in their traditional combat area, like The Mines or Skull Cavern.

They will still drop loot as well; however, the chance of this isn't any higher than fighting them in their combat zones. So, ultimately, the main reason for wanting to turn on monster spawning is for some additional challenge and, to a much lesser degree, to gain some additional loot.
