Summary

  • Befriending neighbors in Stardew Valley can lead to helpful gifts like Cloth, Wood, Batteries, and more.
  • Items like Catfish and Maki Roll from Linus can be crucial early on, making friendship early a priority.
  • Relationships with characters like Emily, Clint, and Pam can provide valuable resources to aid in your farming journey.

Making friends in Stardew Valley is not always at the top of every player's to-do list. After all, you have an old farm to de-weed and clear up, seeds to get into the ground and water, and mines to explore. Your day is never really done as a farmer in this cheerful, but busy, game.

However, there are some relationships that can benefit you the sooner you focus on laying the groundwork for your friendship garden so that it can flourish. That's because, as you grow closer to your new neighbors, some of them will start sending you gifts in the mail. But who sends the best presents?

This list ranks items based on their utility at all stages of the game.

10 Emily

Cloth, Wool, And Sea Urchin

First up is a fan-favorite character, Emily. She's a laid-back and open-minded character who is often helping out others, caring for animals, and being true to herself. And soon she can send some of her never-ending kindness your way if you hurry up and befriend her.

Her goodies are most helpful in the earlier stages of the game, but still help nonetheless. Cloth and Sea Urchin can be key to helping rebuild the Community Center, giving you a leg up if you get these items early. Plus, Wool can be turned into Cloth, so it's not a bad gift to receive either. You can sell or keep them as your needs in the game change.

9 Linus

Catfish And Maki Roll

Linus can send you one of five items, but the most helpful of those gifts are the Catfish and the Maki Roll. Now, most players will make friends with Linus early on. He likes a large amount of forageable items, meaning you don't have to spend any money to gain hearts with him.

But being pals with Linus and getting these two items is important in the earlier parts of the game. One, Catfish can be very difficult to catch until you are better at fishing, and two, you can't make a Maki Roll until you've built a kitchen or make a cookout kit. Both of these items can be used to rebuild the Community Center, but it can take a while to achieve on your own.

8 Evelyn

Food

Granny Evelyn, as she likes to be called, loves to send your farmer Bread, Chocolate Cake, and Cookies, which is pretty true to a lot of caring and doting grandmothers the world over. These gifts can not only put a smile on your face, but can fill your belly, and your health and energy bars.

Food can, at times, be rough to come by without opening up your pocket book at Gus' Saloon. Sure, you can make your own, but for many of these dishes and artisan goods, it will take time and cost you greatly in resources. So having some sweets from Evelyn can get you through the dog days in the Mines.

7 Gus

Also Food

Unlike the three dishes Evelyn sends you, Gus can send you seven food items. All of them are ripped from his menu and packaged up to be sent through the mail. Even though some of these wouldn't arrive in the best condition. All of the possibilities are:

  • Baked Fish
  • Bean Hotpot
  • Fish Taco
  • Omelet
  • Pancakes
  • Spaghetti
  • Vegetable Medley

These are all helpful in the same way that Evelyn's home cooking is. You can hold onto them and take them into the Mines or even Skull Cavern with you. Some of the dishes, like the Fish Taco, can be regifted to villagers who like or love those items.

6 Robin

Wood

Aside from recipes, there is only one gift that Robin will send you in the mail, and that is wood. While that might sound like a weak gift in real life, wood is one of the resources you will use the most of in Stardew Valley and is one of the gifts that truly never loses value.

Even once you've begun to do things like set up orchards and tree farms, having more wood is never going to hurt or be a bummer when you open up your mailbox. And she gives you 50 pieces every time she decides to send you what she's found "laying around," as she puts it.

5 Clint

Copper, Iron, And Gold Bars

An argument can be made for which character's gifts retain the most use value between Robin and Clint. After all, you'll most likely hit a point in the game where you don't need Copper Bars as often because you'll have so much saved up already. However, the secret to Clint having an edge over Robin is that him sending you a Bar saves you some Coal.

Coal is used not just for smelting, but also for 17 crafting recipes. And it costs a whole heck of a lot more than buying wood. So, anytime you can save on smelting, this pricey resource is a good time in the book of a Stardew Valley farmer. And, if you have a surplus and truly don't want the Bars, you can sell them for some decent change.

4 Marnie

Hay

This can be higher or lower on your personal list depending on how much you like to have animals on your farm. After all, to keep your animals happy, they will need to be fed, and there is only two ways to feed them: fresh grass or hay. And in the Winter, they won't set a single paw or hoof or other appendage outside.

Now, Marnie is often disliked because her store always seems to be closed when you need it to be open, especially for feeding purposes. So, you could think of Marnie sending you hay as either laughing in your face, or truly helpful. No matter her intentions behind it, the hay is going to be useful, even when just stockpiling it for the Winter days and Rainy ones too.

3 Wizard

Jade And Fire Quartz

Early on, Fire Quatz can be such a pain to come across. It can only be found once you've reached Floor 80 in the Mines. It can be found in other ways, like anywhere in the Skull Cavern, or through Magma and Omni Geodes, but regardless, it can still prove to be elusive. You need it for the Geologist Bundle, and it makes smelting Refined Quartz easier.

Jade, while easier to find, can be traded to the Desert Trader for Staircases, which are a necessary part of heading down a significant number of floors in the Skull Cavern. So, no matter which one he sends you, they will both be helpful in one way or another.

2 Pam

Battery Packs And Energy Tonic

While Pam loves sending you Beer, which is a nice gesture to be sure, there are two other items she gifts which are much more beneficial to you: Battery Packs and Energy Tonics. Energy is a resource that, until you've found and eaten a lot of Stardrops, is going to be a problem. So having these around can get you by on your busiest days.

Battery Packs, while not used in the largest number of crafting recipes, is used to make some of the most helpful ones, like Crystalariums and, more importantly, Iridium Spinklers. Spinklers are key to automating your farm as it takes away the biggest drain on your energy outside of the various mining and combat zones, and that's watering your crops.

1 Kent

Bombs And Batteries

Okay, getting a bomb in the mail is never a good thing. Except in Stardew Valley. Kent can send you either Cherry Bombs, Bombs, or Mega Bombs in the mail, all of which help with mining experience, resources, and staircases. Having a lot of them can even help you achieve Mastery.

And, of course, from reading about Pam's gifts, you'll see why Battery Packs are important. All four of his potential items are helpful in the mid to late stages of the game, setting you up for success in the Mines, Skull Cavern, and Volcano Dungeon. Just don't accidentally place a bomb down on your farm.
