It’s not every day that a mysterious figure air-drops random loot crates over Pelican Town, which is why many Stardew Valley players are excited about getting their hands on Mystery Boxes. If you’re wondering how you can get your own Mystery Box, read on.

Updated January 16, 2025 by Jacqueline Zalace: As their name implies, Mystery Boxes in Stardew Valley are quite mysterious! We've updated this guide with even more information to help you, including exact locations of these boxes, and a breakdown of every item that they contain.

Where To Find Mystery Boxes

Unlocking Mystery Boxes

Before you can start collecting Mystery Boxes in Stardew Valley, you will need to trigger a cutscene featuring Mr. Qi dropping boxes from an airplane. This cutscene appears after you spend 50 days in the game, or happen to get a second Prize Ticket. These come from things like quests, special orders, and events.

Where To Find Mystery Boxes

After you’ve seen the cutscene, you will be able to find Mystery Boxes around the valley in the following general ways. These aren't guaranteed and don't involve a specific time, date, or location.

What Is a Golden Mystery Box?

Golden Mystery Boxes are a, well... golden version of the Mystery Box. Once you claim Foraging Mastery, you'll be able to find this version around the valley. Golden Mystery Boxes can be obtained in a similar manner (excluding some set locations).

You'll also be able to trade three normal Mystery Boxes at the Giant Stump (where the raccoons live) in order to get one Golden Mystery Box.

If you have Foraging Mastery, you'll also have around a three percent chance to obtain five golden boxes from Skull Cavern treasure chests.

Golden Mystery Boxes hold all the same things as a typical Mystery Box with two exceptions. The gold version will also contain the Golden Animal Cracker and an Auto-Petter.

How To Open Mystery Boxes

Mystery Boxes can be opened by Clint at the Blacksmith’s shop. The shop is located on the east side of Pelican Town and is open from 9 AM to 4 PM every day, except Fridays. Similar to breaking geodes, Clint will open Mystery Boxes for you in exchange for 25 gold per box.

If you have your own Geode Crusher, you can open Mystery Boxes on your farm whenever you feel like it! You can learn the recipe for this piece of equipment by completing Cave Patrol, which is a special order from Clint.
