Dantooine is the first planet inStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic that you get to explore as a Jedi Padawan and Force user. As such, the game also gives you a look into the role the Jedi play in society at this point in the Star Wars timeline. One of those roles is to serve as a crime solver, which is the basis of the Murdered Settler side quest in KOTOR.

PostsA settler named Calder Nettic has been murdered and the Jedi Bolook tasks you with figuring out which one of the two suspects could have murdered him. There will be multiple outcomes on how "Murdered Settler" can play out, but only one is the best in the end.
Updated on August 19th, 2023 by Andrew Scariati: The Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic remake still remains uncertain, meaning now is the perfect time to enjoy the original instead.
KOTOR's Dantooine investigation, The Murdered Settler, is a classic detective case for any crime-lover. In addition to the unusual set-up, this side quest offers more nuance than you might expect in a world governed by the struggle between the light and dark sides.
This quest will disappear after the events aboard the Leviathan, which takes place after you've acquired your third Star Map. Make sure you get to it before then!
How To Start Murdered Settler Quest
The quest takes place in the Grove section of Dantooine, specifically at the bridge by the river that runs in the middle part of the Grove map.
There you will find a Twi'lek Jedi named Bolook.
Talk to Bolook and he'll tell you he's investigating the murder of a settler named Calder Nettic. He'll also tell you that Calder was out hunting in the cloudy morning when he was seemingly killed by one of two people, Rickard Lusoff and Handon Guld.
Declining to join in the investigation locks you out forever, so don't do that.
Bolook informs you that both men have a noticeable injury, Lusoff with an ankle injury and Guld clutching his own side.
On top of that, blood was found on Calder's rifle, which is currently being analyzed.
Bolook will bring a droid with him to help you with additional information, and your party members won't be able to help you here, so it is all on your detective skills to solve the case.
Questioning Pt 1: Gathering Facts
To get down to the bottom of the investigation, you must question the suspects and then verify the information with the droid.
After that, you must tell Bolook which one of the two men is lying.
There are four rounds of questioning that you must do if you want to solve this murder, and while you can investigate the body and rifle, neither action is required. (More on that later.)
Rounds One and Two
The first round of questioning involves verifying how the suspects came to discover the body.
Guld will tell you that he was out for a daily run when he came across the body with Lusoff nearby.
Lusoff will tell you that he was out hunting and nearly killed an Iriaz when a sun glare screwed up his shot, after which he chased the creature and came across Guld standing over Calder's body.
After this, you can talk to the droid for additional information, before returning to Bolook and telling him your findings.
Bolook will ask you which character you're starting to suspect the killer is.
The correct answer will be Rickard.
Follow up by saying that there was no sun glare since it was cloudy, which means that Rickard's shot should not have been affected.
You won't learn who killed him yet but are getting closer to the truth.
Now for the second round of questioning, which involves asking both suspects what their relationship to the victim is.
Talk to them but they won't tell you much, except Rickard who says he didn't know the victim.
Now talk to the droid who will tell you each suspect's relationship with the victim.
Rickard was business partnerswith Calder whereas Handon rented a speeder off of him.
Return to Bolook and report your findings again, stating once again that Rickard is lying, since he lied about being business partners with Calder.
Questioning Pt 2: Truth Revealed
Midway through the proceedings, things aren't looking great for dear Rickard. But would KOTOR put you through your paces with four straight rounds of Rickard-riffing?
Probably not, so time to continue.
Rounds Three and Four
Round three of questioning suspects in Murdered Settler involves the murder weapon. Just like before, talk to the suspects and Handon will surprise you by telling you that his wife was cheating on him with the victim.
Despite the clear motive, Handon pleads his innocence saying that his blaster was stolen recently.
Ask the droid about Handon's report of his blaster and he will tell you there is no reportof a stolen blaster from Handon.
Talk to Bolook again and this time tell him that Handon is lying and select the option that states he lied about the blaster being stolen.
This is the last part of questioning before the big reveal.
Talk to both suspects one last time and then the droid will tell you the blood analysis is completed, showing that the sample is heavily degraded, but what is apparent is that the blood on the rifle is not Calder's.
If you haven't engaged in the optional content yet involving investigating the body and gun, this is your last chance.
Talk to Bolook one last time; he'll tell you that the blood belonged to the victim.
Inform him of his mistake and then claim that the blood is Handon's, proven by his injured side. Bolook will check it out and discover that Handon is bleeding from a blaster wound, showing that the blood really was his.
It is now the time to figure out who is really guilty.
Both pieces of optional intel will furtherinform and enrich the protagonist's interactions with Bolook, the suspects, and even the droid, leading to a handful of minor revelations.
The correct and final answer is that both men are guilty.
What happened was that both Rickard and Handon wanted Calder dead, but Handon got to him first and killed him. Then Rickard, who was a good distance away, shot Handon, mistaking him for Calder, causing the wound and prompting him to call the authorities.

PostsResolution And Rewards
Narratively speaking, both men will be imprisoned and Bolook will thank you for your help.
Of course, Knights of the Old Republic is an RPG, and there's more to life in RPGs than pats on the back and imprisoned NPCs.
Experience point payouts are as follows depending on your performance. Note that by following our guide, you'll be locked in for the biggest payout.
- Only accuse one man of the murder; successfully have him imprisoned: 470. A modest sum, but not unwelcome.
- Manage to accuse both men, but only succeed in convincing Bolook of one's guilt: 570. A nice uptick.
- Correctly solve the case, accusing both men of being guilty and having them both convicted accordingly: 1,310. This is massive and makes Murdered Settlers well worth the time it'll take to get through the chatter.
