Summary

  • Until Dawn has had to settle for fifth place at the box office this weekend, falling behind four other movies.
  • Those four movies are Revenge of the Sith, A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, and The Accountant 2.
  • They all made more than $20 million, marking the first time that has happened since Barbenheimer's run.

Until Dawn's movie adaptation hit theaters this past weekend, and it seems to be off to a bit of a shaky start. Not only did the movie spinoff of PlayStation's horror game register a middling score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it has fallen well short of films it really should be outperforming at the box office.

Turns out a lot of people went to the movies this weekend with a lot to choose from. Culture Crave noted that four movies grossed more than $20 million each at the box office over the weekend. That's the first time since August 4, 2023, that four movies have grossed more than $20 million domestically in the same weekend. Those movies were Barbie, Oppenheimer, Meg 2: The Trench, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

A lot more people were still in the running after showing number six than AMC likely anticipated.

The four films that ended that almost two-year streak this weekend are Sinners, A Minecraft Movie, The Accountant 2, and Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith. You didn't read that last one wrong, nor have you been transported back in time. Episode 3 was re-released this weekend to celebrate its 20th anniversary, and it, quite appropriately, made more than $20 million at the box office.

The re-released Star Wars movie actually brought in $25.2 million, but that doesn't fit my neat $20 million on its 20th anniversary quip.

Down in a distant fifth position is Until Dawn. The latest PlayStation Studios flick brought in a little more than $8 million during its opening weekend according to box office tracking website, The Numbers. In the grand scheme of things, that's probably being considered a win by PlayStation and Sony Pictures since the budget for the movie was pretty low at just $15 million.

However, the film falling behind four movies, three of which didn't open this weekend, doesn't make for the best optics. Sinners experienced one of the smallest second week drops in modern movie history thanks to the buzz it's been generating, A Minecraft Movie continues to pull numbers despite being in its fourth week, and it looks like people don't hate Revenge of the Sith as much as you might think.

It's been pretty much nothing but bad press for the Until Dawn movie during its first few days in cinemas. On top of the middling score and getting beaten at the box office by a 20-year-old movie, a former PlayStation narrative director has called out the studio for not crediting the developers who made the game.
