Star Wars Battlefront 3 Was Cancelled "2 Yards From The Finish Line"

A former developer on Free Radical's cancelled Star Wars Battlefront 3 has claimed that it was "two yards from the finish line" before development on the project was shuttered. The history of Star Wars Battlefront is a long and rocky one. Nowadays, hearing that name either has you ready to call Battlefront 2 the greatest comeback story in gaming or sends shivers down your spine as you think about the rise of lootboxes. Even before EA got its hands on the series, Battlefront had a rough development, with the third entry from Free Radical infamously being cancelled late into development back in 2008.Related: We Deserve What Star Wars Has BecomeAs it turns out, "late into development" doesn't accurately describe how close we were to getting the game. Over the last few weeks, a trend on Twitter has had game developers sharing their "ones that got away". This prompted Michael Barclay, current lead designer at Naughty Dog and former Free Radical employee, to share his one that got away - Star Wars Battlefront 3.
Barclay said, I feel like it’s been long enough now to come out and say Star Wars Battlefront III was gonnae be legit incredible and the fact it got cancelled 2 yards from the finish line is an absolute crime. Gamers don’t know what they were robbed of". Barclay then admitted he was "choosing chaos", and even pointed out the fact that there are technically two Battlefront 3's that Star Wars fans have been denied.
This is far from the first time that a former Battlefront developer has spoken about the game's troubled development. Former Free Radical cofounder Steve Ellie previously said that the game was "99 percent done" before it was shelved, something that was then disputed by an anonymous developer who said the 99 percent claim was "bullshit" and that it was closer to something like 75 percent.
With Barclay's "2 yards from the finish line" comment, it does seem to back up Ellis' claims that the game was very nearly finished and just needed some bug testing. If you're curious about what exactly gamers were "robbed of", several detailed gameplay videos from Battlefront 3's development build have leaked out over the years and can all be pretty easily found on YouTube. It certainly looks like a much more polished version of Battlefront 2, which is absolutely a good thing.
