Completionists will have a hard time filling out their item databases in Star Ocean: The Second Story R without investing heavily in some money-making methods. Ingredients cost money, weapons and armour end up extremely expensive, and with so many item creation skills and specialties being chance-based, much of your money will end up down the drain.
RelatedStar Ocean: The Second Story R - Beginner Tips
This remake adds some wonderful quality-of-life features to Star Ocean: The Second Story, but it's still a complex game at heart.
PostsThankfully, there are a few ways to game the system and gain some easy funds. Some will require luck, while others will need you to be patient and resilient, but they'll all end up making you a ton of Fol. Stop worrying about money with these tips.
Group Appraisal
If you want to truly max out your funds, making clever use of Group Appraisal is necessary. To unlock Group Appraising, you'll need to have two characters with at least four levels in Appraising and one character with a level in Crafting. From then on, you can consume a single pair of Spectacles to enable Group Appraising for a short time.
This skill allows you to buy items with a discount and, more importantly, sell items at a higher cost. Spectacles are cheap and widely available, so there's no excuse to be using this skill whenever you go on a selling spree.
Once unlocked, you'll want to improve your Appraisal levels across your entire party to make your Group Appraisal level higher and thus earn more money overall.
You can increase the bonus that Group Appraisal provides by eating Kasuzuke, which is crafted through the Master Chef Super Specialty using Grains and Vegetables.
Go Fishing
Fishing, a new addition to this version of the game, allows you to amass stacks of expensive fish quite easily. The important point here is that the character you fish with should have a very high Fishing level, if not max it out completely. That way, you'll have a very good chance of fishing up multiple catches at once (somehow...).
To further improve your fishing hauls, there are two things you can do:
- Enable the use of Fishy Fragrance (also called 'Chum' by the game) - you'll know whether or not this is enabled by standing still next to a fishing spot for a few seconds until a menu pops up at the bottom of the screen.
- Get the Masterwork Rod from Reel (found in Harley or L'Aqua, depending on where you are in the game) after discovering 15 different types of fish.
You can trade any Large fish for a Fishy Fragrance from Reel - the investment will almost always turn out to be profitable in the long run as you can get a ton of fish (and treasure chests!) from a single Chum-enabled pull.
As you get higher levels of Fishing and acquire a large selection of fish you can use as bait (though you don't need to use any bait for most fish!), it will become easy to seek out the most expensive fish. Some of the best fish to collect are:

Many of these fish can only be caught in the second half of the game, but there are plenty of opportunities to get expensive fish early on - the Hoffman Sharks you can find in Harley are particularly good for early-game moneymaking.
Publication
Publishing books is an easy way to earn thousands passively; all it takes is some investment into Writing and some rather cheap items.
After publishing a few books, return to the editor every hour or so to pick up a nice royalty check.
Selling Nectar
Nectar is a very potent healing item that recovers an ally's HP and SP by 100 percent. More importantly, it can be sold for over 100,000 Fol, up to 170,000 with a max Group Appraisal and a Kasazuke bonus.
Nectar is acquired very rarely from using Master Chef, but it's so rare that you can't rely on it. To combat that, you can create Sole in Wine Sauce using MasterChef. After using this, you'll gain a significant bonus to your Nectar creationchances for two Master Chef uses, as indicated by the meal icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
Once you have the Sole in Wine Sauce buff active, cook a batch of Fruit and Vegetables or Egg and Vegetables with Master Chef, and you should get some Nectars to sell! Make sure you're cooking these in maximum batches (making ten items at a time, that is) for the highest chance of getting multiple Nectars.
The ingredients for both Sole in Wine Sauce and the Nectar itself are very cheap, so this can be done infinitely until you never have to worry about money again.
