The Resident Evil series banks heavily on multiple protagonists in each entry. While the likes of Leon, Chris, Jill, Claire, and others are touted as the main heroes, they’re always accompanied by supporting characters. These sidekicks can range from frustrating to being capable people to have around.

Their mettle is best realized within the narrative, as the most competent ones have kept the heroes alive. Since they’re largely underrated compared to the main protagonists of the campaigns, it’s worth shining light on the sidekicks who’ve done the best jobs. It also goes to show that no hero is complete without someone having their back along the way.

10 Moira Burton

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 features Barry Burton’s daughter Moira joining the Resident Evil playable character roster. But she’s mainly Claire Redfield’s companion, learning the ropes as the latter guides her. Moira’s character development makes her a compelling sidekick because of how much she matures.

Moira starts as an entitled young woman who thinks she knows best. It’s after she’s rescued by Claire and realizes her father’s efforts to protect her that Moira comes around. Her in-game quality improves gradually as well, as Moira becomes far more competent while helping her partner. It takes some getting used to, but Moira grows on you eventually.

9 Helena Harper

Helena is Leon’s sidekick during his arc in Resident Evil 6. The character isn’t the most lively because she spends her time worrying about her sister. But this makes her relatable since the idea of looking for family members in a time of distress can be understood.

Helena fulfills her responsibilities to Leon without fail, directly aiding the latter during his adventure, unlike his previous sidekicks. The lack of an emotional connection between the two is a certain downside, although Helena’s competency in the field can’t be overlooked.

8 Ingrid Hunnigan

Hunnigan never participates in the action alongside Leon during Resident Evil 4. Still, she’s his most valuable ally, as she provides Leon with intel and support that enables him to survive. As such, she’s considered a sidekick during the story, remaining by Leon’s side even if she’s not physically present.

Hunnigan’s banter with Leon is far more entertaining than his dynamic with Ashley. Their interactions bring much-needed levity to the otherwise grim story. It would have been better had Hunnigan been present for the action, but she’s a solid ally for the protagonist overall.

7 Luis Sera

Luis would have left a bigger mark had he stuck around for longer than he did. The character is a breath of fresh air when he becomes a situational ally for Leon in Resident Evil 4. Luis’ one-liners and penchant for arriving in the nick of time make him someone hard to forget.

He’s Leon’s primary sidekick during the initial portion of the game, helping the hero until he can get deeper into the island. Luis’ battle skills aren’t on par with Leon’s, but they’re good enough to bring down a considerable amount of foes. It’s a shame he dies before he can see through the whole adventure since his feisty style is fun to be around.

6 Rebecca Chambers

Rebecca has a supporting role in the first Resident Evil, where she’s useful for reviving the playable character. While she becomes a protagonist in her own right in Resident Evil Zero, she’s still remembered as one of the best sidekicks. This is due to the sensitivity she brings to characters known for their toughness.

The youngster is more empathetic than her partners, which helps them retain their morality. Within gameplay, Rebecca can be a bit of a burden since players have to protect her. But she’s never a total liability – her value as a helper and friend outweighs any negative gameplay traits.

5 Sheva Alomar

Sheva is Chris’ partner during Resident Evil 5, playing a vital role in eliminating Albert Wesker for good. She’s the perfect blend between strength and sensitivity, providing Chris with equal amounts of action and emotional support. Although she’s a co-protagonist, Sheva’s role in the story is to have Chris’ back to affirm his belief in the goodness of humanity.

Sheva might not have the most depth in terms of personal character development, but she’s the reason why Chris has the confidence to face Wesker. Because of the impact she has on her partner, Sheva fulfills the primary function of a sidekick. Her absence since remains one of Resident Evil’s longest-running mysteries.

4 Sherry Birkin

Sherry is technically Claire’s sidekick in Resident Evil 2, but she’s too helpless to adequately help out. However, the adult Sherry fully contributes to Resident Evil 6 during her partnership with Jake Muller. The latter leads the arc while Sherry acts as his protector.

Sherry is arguably a more engaging character to follow since she shows a variety of emotions compared to Jake’s rageful demeanor. As a playable character, Sherry doesn’t have any real weaknesses and can keep up with Jake. She would have done better being paired with a solid hero like Leon, although Sherry still ticks all the right boxes.

3 Carlos Oliveira

Carlos wasn’t the best character in the original Resident Evil 3, yet became just that in the remake. He’s the reason Jill remains alive, having rescued her in Raccoon City. He’s got Jill’s back through and through, to the point where he mowed down droves of zombies on his own to protect her.

Carlos’ direct interactions with Jill are fewer than there should have been, which prevents him from reaching the highest status. But his loyalty toward her is rarely matched in the series by others, as Carlos refused to leave her side at any point. He’s a man of action who doesn’t hesitate a second to get into gear.

2 Piers Nivans

While there are better stories in the Resident Evil series than in the sixth entry, Piers is among the best parts of the narrative. As Chris’ right-hand man, Piers watches his mentor go through survivor’s guilt. He’s the one who leads the team while Chris is down, simultaneously raising the latter’s spirits.

Piers is just as skilled as Chris is within gameplay while being better in this regard within the story. His sacrifice gives Chris the push to get out of his depression to honor his protégé's memory. All in all, Piers contributes greatly both during the playthrough and to the hero’s character development.

1 Barry Burton

Barry is the person anyone would opt to have around them since he’s a man who will stop at nothing to get the job done. Although he did betray the heroes in the first game, it was only because his family was threatened. On the whole, Barry remains steadfast by the side of his friends, putting himself in harm’s way.

Barry is a powerhouse in terms of physicality and strength, making him the perfect person to have around when around hordes of enemies. His likable personality and funny dialogue are great character traits that contrast with the seriousness of the main heroes.
