Resident Evil 4 isn't for the faint of heart. Regardless of the grisly display of violence and terror, you will often be pressed to ensure you have the tools necessary to keep breathing. Things get a tad stressful if you find that your ammo has been depleted or you've taken your last green herb.

Luckily, Leon has the enigmatic Merchant ready to supply you with everything you need to win the day. But like everything in this world, the Merchant's stock has a hefty price. As you scrounge for gems and precious coins, you will want to be sure your spending is effective and strategic.

Always The Knife

That knife Marvin once gave Leon in Resident Evil 2 is precious and Leon's ultimate lifeline in a pinch. Unfortunately, it degrades and eventually breaks after so much use.

Sure, you can find other knives throughout the game, but they're all disposable, never to be reused again.

So, you'll want to invest heavily in this precious blade right from the start.

Sink your money into theweapon's durability and damage impact as quickly as you can. The sooner your max out your knife, the better off you'll be.

And it will possibly save you money by greatly reducing the number of times you will need to pay the Merchant to fix it.

Bolt Thrower

This weapon doesn't come packing a ton of ammo, but it does do something no other firearm in the game can. Its ammo, or bolts rather, are retrievable.

This means that if you don't get too wild with the weapon and focus all your shots on the meaty flesh of Leon's intended victims, you can pluck those bolts right out of their corpses to be reused once again.

The value of a weapon with recyclable ammo can't be overstated. Furthermore, it's one of Leon's best stealthy projectile options if you intend to keep things quiet for as long as possible.

Attache Case Upgrades

Your attache case is Leon's inventory system. It looks like a briefcase that he must somehow hide in his active pants. You'll find that you often have to organize it to most effectively use the real estate it offers in terms of on-the-go storage.

So, it shouldn't really be any secret that upgrading your inventory space is a huge priority.

Upgrades for the attache case won't be available immediately. In fact, you won't be able to purchase your first upgrade until you are a few chapters deep into the mainline story.

But once it becomes an available item in the Merchant's stock, you should prioritize acquiring these upgrades first.

Limited-Time Deals

The Merchant is a savvy businessman. He knows how to attract the customers he needs to fatten his own wallet. As such, he often provides Leon with discounts and deals that vanish when not taken advantage of.

Given that you must budget your ammo, supplies, and money wisely in Resident Evil 4, it's probably a safe bet that limited-time deals should be prioritized given that they can save you a great deal of scratch.

Other Weapons And Their Associated Ammo Recipes

Throughout your adventure into the terrifying countryside of rural Spain, Leon will eventually begin finding ammo for weapons other than the handgun he walked into the story with.

Therefore, it behooves you to start acquiring other weapons that can make use of this ammo.

Besides, having multiple options like long ranged rifles with a scope or close-range hip-firing gems like the shotgun is only going to aid your strategy for taking on hordes of enemies.

Just note that when you purchase a weapon, you should probably ensure that you can also buy the ammo recipe alongside it to craft ammo for the weapon when the time arises.

You can't rely solely on finding ammo, as you'll sometimes be sorely disappointed.

As a note, one item you should resist purchasing from the start is a first-aid spray.

Between chicken eggs, fish, herbs, and other first-aid sprays you'll find along your journey, there isn't much reason to waste your hard-earned pesetas on a healing item unless absolutely necessary.

Standout Weapon Choices

Striker

While buying new weapons, in general, is a great idea, there are some in particular that are worth focusing on. This gun will cost you38,000 ptas. It's a type of shotgun great for killing Ganados and the infected at close range.

But what's even better is that you'll notice it has a drum clip that boosts the amount of ammo you can expend before reloading and also effectively makes this shotgun a semi-automatic weapon. This weapon becomes available at the merchant somewhere around Chapter 10.

Broken Butterfly

This revolver packs a punch. Fans of the original Resident Evil 4 are likely keenly aware of this already. The Merchant should have this in his inventory by the time Chapter 7 rolls around, and it will cost you 42,000 ptas. Trust us; it's worth every penny.

Stingray

This weapon is an AR, a must for crowd control. The infected may be slow-moving. But when they crowd up and surround you, all bets are off. The Stingray will help you cut through the herd.

Additionally, it has some effective upgrades available that will have you taking this weapon well into the late game. It can first be purchased from the Merchant in Chapter 7 for 30,000 ptas.
