Resident Evil 4 added The Mercenaries in a free update at the end of last week, and it’s incredible. The Horde mode - which I imagine helped inspire similar offerings found in Gears of War years later - remains largely unchanged compared to previous iterations. It still boils down to picking a character, jumping into one of three stages, and surviving for however long you can against a finite onslaught of enemies. Fixed loadouts and strict score management only serves to make it that much more fun. Especially if you’re playing as the elusive Hunk.

No, I’m not talking about a buff sexy dude, although he might be under all of that equipment. Instead, it’s a Biohazard operative who operates with the utmost precision. Armed with an MP5, loads of grenades, and a love for snapping necks, Hunk is as overpowered as they come. Yet he is embraced for that unbalance instead of derided, having already become a shortcut to netting an S+ rank by casuals like me who have trouble fending off the unending hordes as Leon.

Hunk has more health, more armour, and a special ability that not only makes his firearm more powerful, but also gives it unlimited ammo for an extended period of time. Killing folks in this state also increases the time on the clock, meaning it is trivial to achieve huge scores and finish each stage, so long as you’re even the slightest bit careful. I blitzed my way across all available stages with almost no effort. Either Hunk is overpowered or I’m just that much of an expert gamer that even I can’t comprehend my own skills anymore and being this good just comes naturally to me.

This mercenary’s (now the name makes sense!) most powerful skill however is how he swerves around to the back of enemies and can snap their necks in a single move rather than a basic melee attack. He even shifts his hand in a super cool motion once the deed is done to showcase how much of a hardass he is. You might be comparing this to the German suplexes used by Leon or Luis’ brutal pipe swing, but it is so much more than that.

No matter what foe you happen to be up against, even the chainsaw-wielding Ganados, this neck snap will kill them in one beautiful strike. Make them vulnerable to a melee attack and Hunk can basically turn the battlefield into a falling line of morbid dominoes. I developed the habit of throwing a flash grenade and snapping roughly eight necks at once when things got tough, thinning the ranks with the utmost precision. It felt like cheating, but Resident Evil 4 almost doesn’t care, and wants Hunk to feel like an unstoppable zombie slaying badass.

Hunk doesn’t talk or even show emotion, he merely gets the job done with style and gets the hell out of there. His character has always operated on this logic, often in similar modes like this where his presence is almost a reward in itself. There is an evident charm to playing as Luis for the first time or returning to the grumpy boots of Krauser, but Hunk just hits different.
