Summary

  • Collecting rare PSP games can be lucrative, with titles like Hexyz Force and Persona 2 fetching high prices. (98 characters)
  • Late-era releases like Summon Night 5 demand premium prices due to their scarcity and limited editions. (95 characters)
  • The rarest PSP game, The Hilton Family, was exclusively made for Hilton employees, making it extremely valuable. (108 characters)

It's very popular to collect games for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox 360, but one system with a very niche collecting scene is the PSP. The PSP was an incredible portable system, being the predecessor to the iPhone in many regards with its multimedia functionality.

13 Rarest PlayStation 5 Games And How Much They're Worth

While the PS5 is part of the current generation of consoles and still has years ahead of it, it already has some rare and expensive games.

However, it was also hacked extremely quickly, and it's so easy to do these days that using UMD discs for actually playing games instead of dumping them on your system is a bit of a pointless affair. That said, there are still a lot of rare PSP games, mainly of the RPG variety, that aren't available elsewhere.

All values are based on PriceCharting's complete price at the time of writing.

Updated on March 31, 2025, by Dominic Allen: People in the collecting scene know that just a few years is enough to completely change the prices of games. The price often changes day by day, and with the last version of this list released in 2019, the landscape of PSP collecting is completely different. Sure, a few games remain, but many new ones have been added, including the rarest of them all.

10 The Legend Of Heroes 3: Song Of The Ocean - $147

The Start Of The RPG Burn

Several Legend of Heroes games launched on the PSP, with the second-rarest being The Legend of Heroes 3: Song of the Ocean. This series is a spin-off to the long-running Dragon Slayer series of RPGs.

The only Western release of Song of the Ocean is on the PSP, so if you're getting into the series, you'll have to play this version as it's the only one with English support. The high price point likely comes from poor sales, as the game didn't review well at the time.

9 Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles Premium Edition - $149

An Expensive Price For Two Cult Classic RPGs

One of the most underrated consoles of all time has to be the TurboGrafx-16. It had a lot of great games, including Ys 1 & 2, a phenomenal 16-bit RPG compilation up there with the best of the SNES.

In the West, it was rereleased physically on the DS and PSP, and both demand wildly high prices. This is one of those rare games that people buy to play, given it's a cult favorite RPG and the fact that the Premium Edition is only around $40 more than the regular version.

8 Summon Night 5 Limited Edition - $151

A Very Late Launch

Another thing common in game collecting is that titles launched near the end of the system's life are usually expensive. Look at Teen Titans for the original Xbox, for example. The PSP equivalent would be Summon Night 5.

Launched in North America in 2015, it's one of the final physical launches on the PSP, and the regular version alone costs $95. However, the Limited Edition, exclusive to only a few thousand units, demands an even higher price of $151. Some late-era titles lost their value, like The Last Story on Wii, but Summon Night 5 has retained its high price all these years later.

7 DJ Max Fever Crew Edition - $151

Signatures Matter A Lot

One factor that often significantly affects video game prices is signatures. Certain collector's editions have risen in value due to these signatures, like the Dead Space Ultra Limited Edition for the Xbox 360, and another example would be DJ Max Fever Crew Edition.

You get various goodies along with a signature from the dev team, which is the notable highlight, but there were only 125 made. That's a wildly low number of copies, plus it was an online exclusive in an era where that wasn't so commonplace.

6 The Legend Of Heroes: Trails In The Sky Premium Edition - $154

Legend Of Heroes Strikes Again

Close

The other expensive Legend of Heroes game is The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. This game has quite an interesting history because, despite launching on the PSP in 2006 in Japan, it took five years to come to the US. That's a ridiculous amount of time that probably wouldn't take as long in today's age of video game localization.

The only Western physical release is on the PSP, with even the base copy reaching nearly $100. The Premium Edition, on the other hand, will add an extra $54 to the total amount. Unlike Legend of Heroes 3, you can still buy Trails in the Sky through Steam if you just want to play the game.

5 Shin Megami Tensei: Persona Soundtrack Bundle - $162

Persona Is The King Of Rare PSP Games

Close

A big series on the PSP is Persona, with some entries exclusive to the system in North America. The first two Persona titles on PS1 and PSP demand outrageous prices, not helped by the fact that they have yet to be rereleased by Atlus.

Persona 1 on the PSP is a direct port of the PS1 game, and while it's far cheaper than the original, it still costs a ton. Even the base game is only $40 cheaper than the Soundtrack Bundle, which is more highly desired.

4 Hexyz Force - $167

Another Rare Atlus Game

Close

Atlus made many RPGs for the PSP, but some ended up forgotten. Case in point: Hexyz Force. A later-era PSP RPG, it's an alright game but definitely not worth the $167 asking price. There's not even a limited edition with a poster or soundtrack CD for your money, unlike other PSP RPGs.

The game's high rarity likely points to poor sales as the reason for the cost, as it's not a cult favorite like many other rare RPGs on the system. It being a late-era PSP game in 2010 also doesn't help matters.

3 Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 - Innocent Sin Limited Edition - $196

A Prequel, Not A Port

Close

While Persona 1 on the PSP was a direct port of the classic PS1 game, Persona 2 is a little different. Persona 2, which launched in North America on the PS1, was actually the third game in the series titled Eternal Punishment. The actual second game, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, only came to North America on the PSP.

This is an important clarification, as many might not realize the PS1 and PSP Persona 2 games are different. Regardless, as it's still the only Western launch of Innocent Sin, it demands ridiculous prices, even more so for the Limited Edition. A remastered collection on modern platforms or even the original PS1 and PSP games appearing on PS Plus would definitely lower these prices a bit.

2 Persona 3 Portable Junpei Hat Bundle - $300

$300 For A Hat?

Close

Thankfully, Persona 3 is available on all modern platforms, unlike the prior instalments, so the PSP version isn't too wildly expensive. However, the Junpei Hat Bundle is an entirely different story. Anyone who pre-ordered Persona 3 Portable on the PSP at select retailers got a Junpei hat as a sweet bonus.

Unlike most pre-order bonuses, which have little value, the Junpei hat is quite a big collector's item. You have to consider that Persona wasn't a huge RPG franchise in the West yet, so there are not as many hats out there as you may think. Luckily, the actual game is no different, so you just need to buy the expensive hat to complete the bundle.

1 The Hilton Family - $1,672

For Employees Only

By far, the weirdest, most fascinating, and odd game on the PSP also happens to be its rarest: The Hilton Family, also known by its real title, Hilton Ultimate Team Play. This was a game exclusively designed to train employees at various Hilton hotels across the world. It's so locked down, in fact, that only specialized PSP systems can play the game, which usually meant PSP consoles at the Hilton hotels.

However, like all these types of games, physical copies of the UMD ended up getting out there in the wild, probably sold off by employees. With this game strictly designed for training purposes and not meant to be in consumers' hands, you can see why this game would demand over $1,500.
