From spinoffs in iconic PlayStation franchises to hidden gems that never got the original attention they deserved, the PSP’s list of games on PS Plus may be small, but there are already some unmissable titles on it. Thanks to the Classics Catalogue, the PSP has enjoyed a second life among a newer generation of gamers.

10 Key Of Heaven

An Early PSP Action RPG

In the early days of the PSP, developers felt a certain pressure to make games that showcased the console quality potential of the handheld. Some of these games succeeded at this mission, while others fell short. Thankfully, Key of Heaven was one such success.

Known as Kingdom of Paradise in certain parts of the world, this stylish action RPG had depth in both its story and battle system. There is plenty of great worldbuilding to sink your teeth into and the Bugei scrolls make for combat that is highly customisable.

9 No Heroes Allowed!

It Feels Good To Be Bad

Sometimes, it’s fun to step over to the dark side. No Heroes Allowed – and the entire Badman series – lets you do exactly that by creating mazes and obstacles to stop heroes from reaching a demon lord.

Real-time strategy games didn’t get a lot of representation on the PSP, so it’s good that No Heroes Allowed provides the kind of fast-paced, energetic gameplay you would expect from this genre. With an irreverent sense of humour and a timeless art style, No Heroes Allowed proves that it can be fun to work for the villain.

8 MediEvil: Resurrection

The Return Of Sir Daniel Fortesque

MediEvil: Resurrection occupies a strange place in the series. It is a 2005 PSP reimagining of the original 1998 PlayStation One game, which also received a second remake – this time for the PS4 – in 2019. Are you taking notes?

While at face value you may consider skipping MediEvil: Resurrection in favour of the HD remake on PS4, there is still merit to returning to Sir Daniel Fortesque’s PSP outing. Importantly, Resurrection has a load of content that can’t be found in either the PS One or PS4 versions of this game, ensuring it remains relevant to fans all these years later.

7 Killzone: Liberation

How To Make A Good PSP Shooter 101

The best decision that the developers of Killzone: Liberation made was to avoid making it into a first-person shooter. FPS games on the PSP rarely worked thanks to the system’s limited controls, so deciding to make Killzone: Liberation an isometric shooter was nothing short of inspiring.

The result is a game that feels more deliberate and tactical, with encounters requiring a cautious approach over a simple guns blazing assault. Throw in an intriguing story set between the first and second Killzone, and you have a PSP shooter that feels perfectly custom-made for the hardware.

6 Tekken 6

A Worthy Port Of A Beloved Fighting Game

The Tekken series had a strong representation on the PSP, with Tekken 6 being a surprisingly faithful port of the console version. While it does omit the Scenario Campaign mode, just about everything else you could ask for is here.

Tekken 6 was already one of the most graphically impressive games on the PSP, but with the remastered version on PS Plus Classics Catalogue, it looks crisper than ever before. Throw in a comprehensive character roster and Tekken’s trademark engaging combat, and this version of Tekken 6 more than delivers.

5 Ridge Racer 2

2 Ridge, 2 Racer

The PSP was known for having some fantastic racing games, with the iconic Ride Racer series drifting its way onto Sony’s handheld. The second PSP Ridge Racer didn’t try to reinvent the wheel – instead opting for refining what the series was already really good at.

The racing is genuinely some of the most exciting on the PSP, with electrifying speed, excellent track design, and of course, epic drifting. For a top-notch PSP racing game that is still as fun to play today as it was back in 2006, you can’t do too wrong with Ridge Racer 2.

4 Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall

In many ways, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror fulfills the PSP’s promise of delivering rich cinematic gaming experiences on a handheld. It ticks all the boxes; a globe-trotting spy story filled with espionage and intrigue, third-person shooting gameplay that doesn’t feel compromised at all, and perfectly paced levels that offer plenty of gameplay variety and never overstay their welcome.

The Classics Catalogue version of Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror even lets you aim with the right analogue stick – a control luxury that the PSP was obviously without. While the Syphon Filter series may be stuck in a years-long limbo, at least you can enjoy what made these games so popular back in the day by playing Dark Mirror.

3 Echochrome

It’s All About Perspective

While some PSP games are starting to show their age, Echochrome still feels as fresh as it did in 2008. A lot of the game’s enduring appeal comes down to its minimalist art style, but the brain-bending puzzle mechanics at the core of Echochrome is what keeps it relevant to this day.

Echochrome is all about manipulating the perspective of a level so that an autonomous mannequin can reach its goal. Playing god with each level to create the right pathway is incredibly satisfying and the cool, simplistic aesthetic of Echochrome gives it a unique look and feel over other puzzle games.

2 Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny

A God-Tier Fighting Game For The PSP

Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny doesn’t provide a half-baked fighting game experience just because it is a PSP game. Instead, it fully captures the action-packed weapon-based combat that the series is known for while carrying over a lot of the modes and customisation options that made Soulcalibur 4 such a good game.

But let’s be real here. The reason Broken Destiny is so fondly remembered among PlayStation fans is because it lets you play as the God of War himself, Kratos. The Ghost of Sparta slots in naturally with the rest of the character roster and is a blast to play in this excellent handheld spinoff to such a beloved fighting game series.

1 Resistance: Retribution

One Of The PSP’s Best Games, Full Stop

The PSP was home to some truly terrific spinoffs of iconic PlayStation franchises. While Resistance: Retribution falls into this category, it also goes above and beyond, elevating itself to being one of the best games in its series.

Developer Sony Bend took lessons from their previous PSP Syphon Filter games to create a comprehensive third-person shooter in the Resistance series. The weapons were as inventive as ever, the mainland European setting was inspired, and the story of rogue soldier James Grayson may be the most entertaining in the entire series.
