Luckily, Metagross didn't begin a reign of terror akin to the powerful Mewtwo Y, but it remains a powerful choice worth learning. All-Rounders can be hit-or-miss and range from excellent to useless, but Metagross warrants consideration if you like its design or playstyle.

When To Pick Metagross

Metagross is a strong meta option in most team compositions, but it shines on teams that need a melee character to dominate the front lines with a Supporter or Defender.

You should choose Metagross on teams that can capitalize on its Unite Move, which can trap opponents with a massive wall if three Pokemon are in the vicinity when the Unite Move is used.

Team compositions that include Gardevoir or Delphox are lethal combinations with Metagross, as they prevent teams from escaping or healing after the initial dive from Metagross.

Metagross: Gyro Ball Build

Each of the two Metagross builds will include Magnet Rise, as it is currently the best form of mobility at Metagross' disposal. Magnet Rise even offers a knock-up stun that is only fractionally shorter than Zen Headbutt with a better list of secondary effects.

For clarity, Magnet Rise provides the following benefits:

  • Increasesmovementspeed by 60 percent (loses 15 percent every second)
  • Deals damage in a small areaofeffect upon your next basic attack.
  • Basic attack lunges acrossterrain and obstacles.
  • Knocksupopponents hit by the attack for 0.6 seconds

When combined with Gyro Ball, Metagross becomes an extremely annoying foe to face at close range, and even more difficult to escape from if you're losing the fight.

Gyro Ball allows Metagross to hit targets just outside its melee range, while Magnet Rise enables it to chase down targets who would otherwise be too fast for it.

The shield from Gyro Ball offers protection against ranged characters who may be lingering nearby, making Metagross a ferocious opponent one-on-one, but still exceptionally dangerous against multiple targets.

Its Unite Move, Compute and Crush, allows it to engage against three or more enemies without guaranteeing it will be knocked out in the process.

Against two opponents, Compute and Crush's lunge helps Metagross focus on taking out one target immediately with its three hits of damage.

Against three or more opponents, Metagross will still lunge, while also creating a wall in a large area around it, preventing onlookers from fleeing.

Overall, the combination of Gyro Ball, Magnet Rise, and its Unite Move makes Metagross a dangerous Pokemon at any range when its abilities are available.

Manage your ability cooldowns well, and this build will cause major problems for squishy mages.

Metagross: Meteor Mash Build

Unfortunately, Meteor Mash plays second fiddle to Gyro Ball, but it does provide some interesting benefits that may suit your playstyle.

Meteor Mash offers:

  • A cone of damage with up to four ticks.
  • A 20percentslow for three seconds.
  • Gives a shield based on the number of enemies hit (stacking up to eight).
  • Increasesbasicattackdamage following the hits.

Meteor Mash is great for fighting crowds of enemies who all love to stand within your cone, but outside of bot matches, such an occurrence is rare and requires precise positioning.

What's more, any team who knows you have Meteor Mash (which will be clear after your first use of it) will instantly spread apart, reducing its effectiveness outside of surprise attacks.

Which Items Are Best For Metagross?

Held Items

Metagross benefits greatly from extra damage, so Attack Weight will help it ramp up damage after you score a few times in the lane.

Razor Claw helps you to take advantage of furtherstacksof basic attack damage after using one of your moves. This pairs extremely well with Magnet Rise.

Weakness Policy supports Metagross' brawling playstyle, allowing it to buff its attack after taking a hit.

If you want to opt for a more defensive build, you can swap Razor Claw for an AeosCookie to stack HP along with your Attack Weight stacks.

Battle Items

Metagross's Clear Body helps it reduce the duration of hindrances by ten percent, but in a metagame where crowd control (CC) is paramount, opting for a Full Heal is the most prudent choice, as it will completely free you from stuns and other CC.

If you want to surprise your opponents with quick dives toward the backline or need a way to escape after an over-commit, then EjectButton will be your best friend.
