Summary

  • Sciel is altered in a mod to have lighter skin, stripping her original olive tone.
  • The mod has sparked controversy over unnecessary changes to characters.
  • Some players support the modification, prompting discussions on racial implications.

Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 has been lauded for many things, one of which is its characters. Everybody who is part of the Expedition 33 team, and almost every other character in Lumière for that matter, has been designed and characterized in such a way that it's impossible not to care about them.

However, much like those who felt the need to make Monster Hunter Wilds' Alma "More Attractive", there is a section of the Clair Obscur audience who can't leave characters alone, with one new mod whitewashing one of the Expedition 33 party members.

Sciel Is The First Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Member To Be Unnecessarily Altered

Sciel is the fourth member of the Expedition 33 team you meet in Clair Obscur, following Gustave, Maelle, and Lune. She's an olive-skinned teacher who has a great love for her students and a strong hatred for the Paintress. Given the situation, Sciel can enjoy a laugh— but for some reason, players have taken offense to the color of her skin.

A new mod on Nexus Mods, which has already garnered 1,000 downloads, is called "Sciel untanned - lighter skin", and makes the character's "body texture less tanned". It's another example of a wholly unnecessary mod altering a team's artistic vision for their characters.

While the mod has seen a hefty number of downloads, it's not been received well by all, with some comments calling out its creator. The callouts have gotten so bad that they've added a comment to the upload, saying, "You love tanned girls, I get it, no need to shout it here," seemingly oblivious to the actual harm the mod does.

But, while some comments have called the creator out, others have leaned fully into its racial implications, calling it "based" and asking for a version where the character has blonde hair and blue eyes. There are also calls to yassify the character more, with players asking for the modder to remove her freckles and the scar across her nose, all of which are defining features of Sciel.

One day, players will just accept that all characters are designed with a vision in mind.
