All the different versions of Persona 3 are excellent, with the latest (Reload) adding some quality-of-life changes that veterans of the series will recognize from Persona 5. Yet all these changes do nothing to the story, which remains as cryptic as ever about the fate of the protagonist.

While there are answers about the ultimate fate of the protagonist, it isn’t immediately obvious if you only play the main campaign. If you wish to know exactly what happens at the end of Persona 3, read on, but be sure to play the game yourself before spoiling yourself such a fantastic game.

As expected, spoilers ahead!

What Happens At The End Of Persona 3?

Like most JRPGs, the plot of Persona 3 involves defeating a godly being that is set to destroy the world. In this game, the celestial creature is Nyx, an alien planet eater that crashed into the Earth long ago. Its essence is trapped on Earth while its body lies on the Moon.

After the final fight against Nyx, the protagonist ascends to the Moon on their own, facing the body of the creature as a final stand. The protagonist emerges victorious, and goes back to earth to spend graduation day with their classmates.

The protagonist is given many different names depending on the medium, like Makoto Yuki or Minato Arisato. Since you can name the protagonist whatever you want, there isn’t really a canonical name.

After saying their farewells to the whole cast, the protagonist falls asleep on Aigis’ lap (the robotic companion of the game) and the game ends. While slightly unclear, the protagonist's fate is sealed here: they die when they fall asleep.

Players had a bit of clarity shed on all of this with Persona 3 FES, where a playable epilogue was added called The Answer. Here, Aigis becomes the lead character and, alongside all the other party members from the first game, she learns that the protagonist died to become a seal that prevents Nyx from destroying the world.

Mentions In Other Games

There are a lot of mentions of the protagonist from Persona 3 in other games, although most of them are just mentions in passing. Persona 4 Arena is a great example of this, as the returning cast of Persona 3 mentions how the protagonist of the fourth game reminds them of their old friend.

The one mention that sheds additional light on the fate of the Persona 3 protagonist is in the Margaret fight. Margaret is the assistant of Igor, and is an optional boss battle at the end game of Persona 4, much like her sister Elizabeth was in Persona 3.

Igor is the owner of the Velvet Room, and serves as a guide for every Persona protagonist.

After the fight with Margaret in Persona 4, she mentions that her sister, Elizabeth, is searching for a way to rescue the “blue-haired boy” from the seal. This is a clear reference to the final destination of the Persona 3 protagonist, and hints that, some day, they might be released from their burden with Nyx.
