With such a vast amount of content, it makes it much more devastating for players when their games suddenly crash, often causing hours of progress loss. Being an early-access game, it's unfortunately more common than not for players to experience glitches or bugs that will inevitably cause progress loss. This guide will explain how to back up your save data to keep your progress safe.

How To Find Your Save Files

The first thing you will need to find is the location of all your Palworld save data.

On your keyboard, press the Windows start button and the R key at the same time to bring up the Run Command Window, where you will type and enter %LocalAppData%.

This will bring you to your local data, where you will find a file folder titled "Pal". Open this file and then proceed through the files "Saved" and "SaveGames".

You should then see a file named after your Steam 64-bit ID. Open it up, and then you will see the saved data for all previous Palworld games that you have had.

If you have multiple saved games, compare the "Date modified" section in your files to the dates within the World Select screen to figure out which game belongs to which file.

How To Back Up Your Save Files

Now that you've found all of your previously saved data, you can now begin the backup process.

The following folders and files should be present within a Palworld saved data folder:

  • Backup (file folder)
  • Players (file folder)
  • Level.sav (SAV file)
  • LevelMeta.sav (SAV file)
  • LocalData.sav (SAV file)
  • WorldOption.sav (SAV file)

The SAV files present at this point represent the data of your most recent save state.

At this point, if you only want to back up your current save state, copy all of the above data except for the Backup file folder and paste it onto an external drive for safekeeping.

In the "Backup" folder, you will find two other folders called "Local" and "World". Enter "Local" first, and you will see several folders named with different dates and times.

These folders contain all of your previous saves. Just match the title to the date of the save you want to back up, copy the "LocalData.sav", and paste it into your external drive.

You'll now have to go back and enter the "World" folder. Like in Local, find the date you want and copy all the files inside, which should be "Players", "Level.sav", and "LevelMeta.sav".

Reloading Your Save Files

To reload your game with the files you just found, you're just going to do the previous two steps in the "Local" and "World" folders, but now you will be pasting them in the "saved data" folder.

Like before, find the "LocalData.sav" that belongs to the "Local" date you want to reload and paste it into the "saved data" folder, where you will let it replace the current file.

Do the same thing with the "Players" folder, "Level.sav", and "LevelMeta.sav" files found in "World".

Open your game and then your save state should be reloaded back to the save file you chose.

Keeping an external drive with your previous saves handy is always a good idea in case you change your mind and want to reload your most recent save.

Backing Up Save Files For Game Pass And Microsoft Store

If you are playing Palworld on Game Pass or the Microsoft Store, backing up your save files is a bit different and a little more complicated.

First, you will open your C: Drive, or local disk, and open up your username folder. Here you will need to open the "App Data" folder.

If you don't see App Data, then it may be invisible. At the top of the file explorer window, click View and then click Hidden Items.

You will then select "Local" followed by "Packages", where you will then search for and enter the folder titled “PocketpairInc.Palworld_ad4psfrxyesvt”.

Here you will click on "SystemAppData" and then go into the "wgs" folder, where you will have finally found your save data files.

Copy the folder that matches the date of the game you're trying to back up and paste it into a safe spot.

If you ever want to reload to that save state, just paste the folder back into "wgs" and the game will reset there.
