However, playing Palworld and hosting the server on the same computer may create a negative experience for both you and the players on your server. In this case, you may want to move your server to a secondary computer. Let's learn in detail how to set up and move a Palworld server with this guide.

What Is A Dedicated Server? What Makes It Different From Other Servers?

If you want to play multiplayer games in Palworld, you have some options ahead of you.

  • Private Multiplayer Server: If you have a group of four or fewer friends and want to play among yourselves, this is the best option for you. In this game mode, one player opens up their world to multiplayer, meaning they host it and invite other friends to join.
  • Official Servers: If you have more than four people or don't have a group of friends, you can join Pocketpair's Official servers. You don't need to set up anything to join. However, some issues like cheating or save deletions, hackers, etc., might be frustrating for you on these servers. These servers can host up to a maximum of 32 players.
  • Dedicated Servers: With this method, there's no need for the host to run the game client on their computer. Additionally, you can find dedicated servers with a large number of players. You'll need an IP address and port number to join. Dedicated servers can be hosted by an online service or an individual.
  • Community Servers: Essentially, there's no difference from dedicated servers in essence. The only difference is that it appears on the game's server list. It shows up in the list because it has registered a server on the server list within the game client.

In short, one of the biggest advantages of a dedicated server is the ability to host a significantly larger number of players compared to a regular server, where only four players can play. Additionally, dedicated servers offer flexibility and the ability to be optimized.

Thanks to dedicated servers, your server will be online 24/7 even if you are offline. This allows others to join and play whenever they want.

If you are determined to set up a dedicated server, here's where the road splits for you. You can either set up the server on your computer or host it from another machine through a vendor. If you decide to set up the server on your computer, you will need to perform tasks like router port forwarding.

If you're concerned about the specifications of your system or if you're using a hosting company's system, definitely do not set up the server on your own computer. What you should do is install the server on the system you rented from the hosting company.

The first thing you need to do is download the Palworld Dedicated Server from Steam. To do this, you can go to the Library tab on Steam and type 'Palworld Dedicated Server' into the search bar to find it. If you don't see any results, make sure that 'Tools' is selected from the dropdown box below the Home button under the Library tab.

After downloading the Palworld Dedicated Server, select the 'Launch' option. Select 'Play Palworld Dedicated Server' from the Steam window that appears and then press the 'Play' button.

Then, a CMD window will appear with "Setting breakpad minidump AppID" written on it. The number at the end varies for each computer as it's assigned uniquely. If you've reached this stage, it means your startup has been successful.

If you want your installed Palworld server to be displayed as a Community Server, you need to set up your server beforehand. If you have done so, when running the Palworld Dedicated Server, you should select the option 'Open and start as a community server'.

Now you can close the Palworld Dedicated Server tool screen. The next step you need to take is to access the Port Forwarding settings of your router. Since each router type is different, this step will vary depending on the type of your router. Then, you should set Port Forwarding to 8211. This is Pocketpair's default port setting.

Open the Dedicated Server folder if you want to use a different port. Afterwards, open the WorldSettings.ini file from this folder. You can write the appropriate port by changing the numbers on the "PublicPort=8211" line.

After configuring the Port Forwarding settings, you need to open the Palworld Dedicated Server tool again.

So, you've completed the setup for the dedicated server. Next, other players need to have the public IP address and port number of your server to join. To find your public IP, you can type "What is my public IP?" into your search engine. Then, add ":8211" to the end of your public IP. The result will look like "11.111.111.11:8211" as an example.

Do not share your IP address with people you do not trust.

The people who will join your server should select the 'Join Multiplayer Game' option from Palworld's main menu. On the opened screen, they should enter your IP address and port number combination into the text box at the bottom, which has 'Connect' written on the right side.

If you've made your server a Community Server, click on the 'Community Servers' button on the left side. Your server will be listed among other community servers, and other players can connect to it by finding it there or by searching for your server name in the search bar above.

For you to connect to your server as the host, you need to use your local IP address, followed by ':8211' at the end.

To find your local IP, type 'cmd' into the search box of your operating system. Then, type 'ipconfig /all' into the black window. Your local IP address is next to the IPv4 text.

If you're going to set up the server on an operating system other than Windows, you can obtain detailed information from Pocketpair's guide.

How To Move Up A Dedicated Server In Palworld?

You may want to move the server you've set up on your computer to another computer or to a server you've rented from a hosting company. In this case, you might be concerned about losing progress on the server on your computer. However, if you follow the steps below, you can move your server to a secondary computer without any issues.

This guide explains how to move the server using the Palworld Dedicated Server tool on the Windows operating system via Steam. If you are using a different operating system, SteamCMD, or a third-party dedicated server service, you may need to follow different steps.

First, start by installing the Palworld Dedicated Server tool on the computer where you will transfer your server.

After downloading the Palworld Dedicated Server, select the 'Launch' option. Select 'Play Palworld Dedicated Server' from the Steam window that appears and then press the 'Play' button. Next, a CMD window will appear with 'Setting breakpad minidump AppID' written on it.

After the number that varies for each computer appears at the end of the text in the CMD window, you can close this window.

Right-click on the Palworld Dedicated Server in Steam and select Manage → Browse Local Files to access the location of this tool. Completely copy the folder named Palserver.

At this stage, there are two important files to be moved. These are the Server Configuration File and the World Save File. You can perform this process by either copying the entire Palserver folder or by copying specific files.

Configuration File directory: steamapps\common\PalServer\Pal\Saved\Config\WindowsServer\PalWorldSettings.ini

You should copy the PalWorldSettings.ini file from here.

World Save File directory: Steamapps\common\PalServer\Pal\Saved\SaveGames\0\

The file name you need to copy from here is quite long. For example, it could be something like B5E673274E3AC83550294D89FEF04AB8. Completely copy this file.

Paste the contents of the files into the directory where the Palserver folder is located on the secondary computer. You can find the Palserver folder on the secondary computer by right-clicking on Palworld Dedicated Server in Steam and selecting 'Browse Local Files'. Allow the same files to be overwritten.

Then, you should perform Port Forwarding from the router settings of the secondary computer. If you haven't changed it, the default port setting is 8211. Depending on the situation, you may need to remove the port forwarding setting from the primary computer.

Afterward, run the Palworld Dedicated Server again from the secondary computer. You can close the CMD window once a single line of text appears.

If your primary and secondary computers are connected to the same network, people joining your server can connect with the same IP address and port number. However, if your secondary computer is connected to a different network, they need to enter the public IP address and port number of the secondary computer to join.

If your primary and secondary computers are linked to the same Steam account, make sure to set Steam to offline on the secondary computer where the Palworld Dedicated Server tool is running.
