Once you finally make it to Black Castle's gate in Lost Castle 2, you'll pass through a series of different areas before facing the boss that guards the entrance to the castle itself, the Wandering Knight.

Unlike some of the smaller bosses, the Wandering Knight will have two distinct phases with different attack patterns you'll need to memorize. The first phase will be the knight riding on his armored horse, and the second will be the knight himself.

The Wandering Knight Phase One

As mentioned, in this first phase, the knight will ride on horseback, wielding a giant axe in each hand. Immediately as soon as you enter this boss fight, the Wandering Knight will charge you, so be prepared to dodge as soon as the short intro scene is over.

Unfortunately, since there are a variety of weapons and builds you can put together in Lost Castle 2, I won't be able to walk you through the best course of action based on your particular build. But I can offer an overview of the Wandering Knight's attack patterns so you're prepared.

While the Knight is riding on horseback, the main attacks you'll need to look out for are:

Attack

Explanation

Forward Axe Swing

If the Knight is within close range of you, it will swing its axe in a sweeping motion from back to front. There's a brief slowness when it swings the axe back initially, so watch for this, and you should be able to dodge before the Knight brings it forward.

Keep in mind that because the Knight has axes on both sides, this attack can hit you regardless of which way it's facing.

Charge

This won't happen often if you're regularly staying within close range of the boss, but occasionally it may charge forward, and you can take damage if you're caught in its path. Typically, it's a pretty straight line, so just dodge either up or down out of the way.

Dive Jump

(Unblockable)*

If you're at a far enough distance, the Wandering Knight may decide to do a bit of a dive jump in which the horse will leap into the air and dive at the ground where you are, as the Knight angles the point of his axe to hit you. Time your dodge with the landing to avoid taking damage.

That said, even if the initial landing doesn't hit, the Knight's axe hitting the ground will cause a ripple of rocks in a straight line in front of them, so don't just back up or go straight ahead.

Your best chance is to dodge towards the Knight, but towards the bottom of the screen, so that you can pass around to the back of where the horse lands. This will put you at the tail of the horse and give you a few seconds to land a few hits while the rocks are still erupting at the front.

Backward Axe Swing (Unblockable)*

Typically, following the Dive Jump move, if you're within range, the horse will rear back and neigh. When it does, you'll see it turn red, which indicates this incoming attack isn't one you can block.

When it lands, the Knight will swing the axe backward towards the tail of the horse in a wide sweeping motion, so make sure you're nowhere near that when it does.

* Anything marked with the (Unblockable) indicator means that you won't be able to block the incoming attack. So don't try to time a block, just dodge and get out of the hit range. You can identify these attacks in the moment by looking for a brief red glow just before the attack lands.

The Wandering Knight Phase Two

Once you've depleted the Wandering Knight's first health bar, the horse will disappear, and the Knight's health bar will replenish. This is the second and final phase of this boss fight, so once you deplete this phase, the fight will be over.

Since the horse is absent and the axes have been swapped for a sword, none of the attacks will be exactly the same as the first phase. For this phase, the attacks you will need to watch out for are the following:

Attack

Explanation

Slash

The most basic attack the Knight will perform during this stage is a swipe of the sword from one side to the other. It's fairly easy to avoid, but it's usually followed by another, stronger attack, so be careful.

There is another version of this where the Knight will swipe upwards too, so watch out for both and don't get too close. The upward strike is unblockable.

Spinning Slash (Unblockable)

This is a move you should be able to see coming, as the Knight will stop and prepare itself for the swing. When it does this, you'll see a ring flash around the Knight, and then it will swing the sword all the way around in a circle.

Like the traditional slash, this will be relatively easy to avoid, but it's also a great opportunity to attack if you're using something with ranged damage since the Knight will be stationary for a moment. This will sometimes be done twice in succession.

While it's generally best to dodge this if you're using a ranged weapon, if you're using a melee weapon and need to maintain closeness, you can also jump over this attack if you time it right.

Downward Strike (Unblockable)

This move is always combined with a traditional slash first, but it's a much more direct attack that is immediately followed by a powerful downward strike, which it will jump forward to do, so be prepared.

Ground Strike

(Unblockable)

When you see the "!" pop up above the Knight's head, it is the first sign that it's preparing to jump and heavily strike the ground. When it does this, it will set off multiple randomly placed explosions on the ground, as well as rocks bursting from the immediate ground surrounding it.

They should be easy enough to avoid, since purple indicators will appear on the ground before they go off, but you'll also need to watch out for the Knight, who will move around and attempt to attack you as they're going off.

This is typically followed by another attack aimed at you. It may either be a jump and punch at the ground in your direction or a rush where the Knight will toss you into the air with the sword. So keep your distance until this attack subsides.

There are smaller versions of this move that won't set off the large rocks, just the explosions, but you won't see the "!" indicator for this variant of the move.

Once you've depleted the health bar a second time, the boss will be defeated, and you will be rewarded with materials that you can use with the Alchemist at camp. From here, you're free to progress into the castle, where you'll face a few more areas with standard enemies, and at the end, the final boss.
