Assassin's Creed Mirage expands on Basim's backstory from street thief to assassin in 9th-century Baghdad, filling in some of the gaps before his new Norse undertaking in Valhalla. While it seamlessly ties into future events and addresses a few questions left over from Valhalla, the game also introduces new content that raises further questions.

Assassin's Creed Mirage Vs. Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Which Game Is Better?

With Assassin's Creed Mirage returning to series roots, how does it compare to Assassin's Creed Valhalla?

Posts

Some of those can relate to general continuity in the series, story elements, or things that may have sparked your curiosity and that you want to learn more about. So, were some of these pressing questions below the ones you were left with after playing Mirage?

10 Why Didn't Basim Have His Tools In AC Valhalla?

Assassin's Creed Mirage has many references to past and future games and is generally good about overall continuity. Where it falters is introducing the stealth tools. Though extremely helpful in the more stealth-oriented gameplay design, these don't come up again in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and Eivor still uses a bow to create a smoke screen and a berserker trap.

It's also worth noting that when Roshan is introduced in the Valhalla DLC, she throws the same red smoke bomb the Hidden Ones of Alamut have, so how does she still get her supply, especially when she left the organization of her own accord? And if she can still get them, why doesn't Basim have these on him in Valhalla, and only the hidden blade?

9 What Was Hytham And Basim's Second Encounter Like?

Another tie-in to Valhalla in Assassin's Creed Mirage is witnessing Basim's initial interaction with Young Eagle, a boy who admires the Hidden Ones and aspires to become one himself. This is, of course, Valhalla's Hytham, and his successful Leap of Faith impresses Basim enough to hint at a future with them.

Basim eventually becomes a mentor figure like Roshan to Hytham, and the two travel with Sigurd to meet Eivor at the beginning of Valhalla. It would be interesting to know the circumstances of the next time he and Basim meet and his recruitment into the Hidden Ones, with Basim's full embrace of his Loki reincarnation.

8 How Did The Apple Already Wind Up In Jerusalem?

At Alamut, you'll find a note from the lead assassin mentor, Rayhan, mentioning Jerusalem may be in possession of an "artifact of great power." It refers to the Apple of Eden recovered in Jerusalem by Altaïr and his accomplices in the first game. So where does this intelligence suddenly come from now, and why aren't the Hidden Ones investigating this artifact sooner?

Roshan in Valhalla's DLC also implies the Apple being found in Jerusalem, with her "A seed to plant in Jerusalem" quote. But what Mirage still fails to explain is how this Apple, last seen in Origins with Bayek handing it off to Sutekh, has been in the wild for so long, and in whose hands it ended up before reaching The Temple of Solomon.

7 Who Was Rayhan's Note About Maysaf Addressed To, And Why Did It Take So Long To Get Built?

With regard to the same letter written by Rayhan, he also mentions that the Hidden Ones would be wise to build a stronghold to the North. It's signed by him, but doesn't state to whom it's addressed, just saying "Brother."

If plans are already in the works in the 9th century for Maysaf, why do we only see it built in the late 12th century by the Levantine Brotherhood?

Being constructed 300 years later seems like a long time, especially with how fast the assassins can expand their bureaus. Maybe they didn't have the resources until that later period, or perhaps this was just a tease too soon. The name being concealed with "brother" is also very suspicious and sounds like some secretive and unsavory brokering is happening.

6 Where Did The Nickname "Little Finch" Come From?

While Nehal may not be an actual person in Basim's life, you do meet a real human friend of Basim's who is seen and acknowledged by other people in the game, especially evident due to his feud with another merchant. It's revealed Kong and Basim grew up together and were best friends before Basim relocated out of Karkh.

Kong has the nickname "little finch" for Basim, but there isn't much backstory explored around their friendship or how this nickname came about. You're only with Kong a short time to return his tea and steal a delicate plate for an invitation to the auction at the Bazaar, so there's little development between them.

5 What Happens To Enkidu?

Like Bayek and Senu, or Kassandra and Ikaros, the bond between Basim and Enkidu in Assassin's Creed Mirage is just as strong in the field. That all changes, however, during the ending when Basim remembers his Isu past and becomes Loki. Enkidu recognizes the change immediately, and now rejects Basim by swiping his cheek with his claw.

You see the scar in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, but no longer Enkidu being by his side. Does Enkidu go to a new Hidden One, or is the eagle retired? This is also quite a red flag and very suspicious that Basim's eagle suddenly wants nothing to do with him, and seems to have gone unquestioned by the Hidden Ones.

4 Was Jasib Training To Be A Thief For Dervis?

Basim is excellent with kids in the game, and one of those examples is his interaction with a young boy named Jasib, who playfully tries to steal Basim's coin pouch. One of the most devastating moments in the game is when the Caliph's soldiers kill Jasib, along with some of the other people Basim grew close to.

It's a huge loss for Basim because this was clearly someone important to him and who he adored. Unfortunately, the brief screen time Jasib had told little about his character. Jasib was serious about thieving, because he even invented his own slingshot to defend himself from merchants who caught him.

Was Basim serving as his mentor, and was he possibly trying to work for Dervis?

3 Who Was In The Isu Memory With Loki?

Basim triggers a memory simulation in the Winter Palace via the Isu device he attempts to steal, which is explained later in the game as his own memory of being imprisoned as Loki. It's a brief sequence where you can't make out either of the forms or their dialogue, and the jailor is also masqueraded as the Jinni hunting Basim.

8 Things That Make No Sense In Assassin's Creed Mirage

Nope, these aren't a mirage! Some things in Basim's journey in Assassin's Creed Mirage don't make a shred of sense.

In Norse mythology, the Gods bind Loki to stone slabs inside a cave with his son Narvi's entrails as a snake's venom drips onto him from above. Many gods were involved in this process, so it's a mystery as to which one was there with him in the memory.

It could be Odin since the beating felt personal, and Loki's punishment was for the killing of Odin's son Baldur, after all.

2 How Long Has Roshan Known About Basim Being Loki?

The way things play out toward the end makes it seem as though Roshan is already aware of Basim's true identity as Loki. Qabiha says, "Your so-called brothers would sooner die than see you claim it," and is killed by Roshan once she makes Basim aware of the Isu temple beneath Alamut.

Roshan warns Basim not to go there, to the point where she says she'll have to kill him, as she attempts to do later.

Did Roshan know all along since Basim's birth and was monitoring him as a child? Is that why she was enlisting help from Dervis to get close to Basim and eventually plant the seeds to recruit him as a Hidden One? And if she did know this whole time, why would she tempt fate and allow Basim to get so close to the Hidden Ones and their agenda?

1 What's Taking Place In The Present Day?

One of the biggest downfalls of Assassin's Creed Mirage is it never gives you further insight into the events happening in the present-day setting, and seeing what's going on with the team would make this game much better.

The events of Valhalla see Basim alive in the present day after switching lives with Layla, so it would be unique to play his role in 9th-century Baghdad simultaneously with his adjustment to life in the 21st century.

However, all you get is a brief blurb from William Miles introducing you to Basim's memories. This also makes you wonder who's accessing them in the animus because Valhalla's ending led you to believe Basim extracts them for William, as he warns Mr. Miles is "for quite a ride," but William talks as if he's taking you through it. And it's still left unexplained during Mirage's ending.
