Like A Dragon: Ishin takes a modern approach to the 2014 classic, with a new crafting system that will require some time and effort to fully understand. Luckily, this system can be broken down into a few key parts that should simplify the somewhat intimidating facade it puts up.

The most important factor to keep in mind is that crafting is a progressive system. You cannot simply skip to the end and craft the best gear immediately; you must first craft the lower-tier weapons. Once you have those, you can follow the Smithing Diagram lines to see which powerful katanas need a particular prerequisite sword.

How To Gather Crafting Resources

Crafting is an expensive process, but gathering the raw materials needed is far more difficult than acquiring money. Nevertheless, money is key if you want to craft the Best-quality gear.

Enchanted weapons do not require a huge amount of money to create, as the 400-500 Ryo costs are merely estimates. Non-enchanted weapons display accurate Ryo costs.

There are five tiers of gear to be aware of:

Type

Color

Dull

Gray

Fine

Green

Good

Blue

Great

Purple

Best

Gold

To start with, you need to amass some capital to ensure you have the means to buy any raw materials needed to craft weapons. You can turn to Another Life's farming section to grind out some money by growing crops and fulfilling orders.

Alternatively, you can instead gamble on Chicken Racing events in Rakugai to make some quick cash.

However, the best method for farming both Ryo and crafting materials is by defeating the Battle Dungeon areas and completing the substory.

Defeating Sanada Nobuyasu at the end of the Battle Dungeon quest will net you 20 Ryo and a handful of crafting items or prerequisite weapons.

Each mission in the Battle Dungeon has a set list of drops and an associated monetary reward, but the final mission in the Sanada Stronghold is easily the best place to gather the rarest crafting materials, including enchanted items of varying quality.

Which Vendors To Use For Crafting

Now that you have the means required to craft some gear, it's time to familiarize yourself with two key vendors:

  1. The Blacksmith in northwest Rakugai.
  2. The Rakugai Arms Dealer, south of the Blacksmith.

Buy as many items as possible from the Rakugai Arms Dealer to increase your reputation, which will unlock rare prerequisite weapons.

These two vendors will be essential in crafting all regular items. Enchanted items require a separate special process.

Firstly, you need to level up your Blacksmith level to gain access to the highest tier of crafting items. You will also need to level up your bond with the Rakugai Arms Dealer.

You can also buy weapons from the arms dealer in Mukurogai to donate to the Blacksmith, but it is a much further journey from place to place.

Luckily, you can level up both vendors at once using a simple method.

  • Firstly, buy a ton of prerequisite gear from the Rakugai Arms Dealer. Buying one at a time works well.
  • Next, take all the items you just purchased and donate them to the Blacksmith.
  • Repeat this process until you are Blacksmith level 15 and the Rakugai Arms Dealer begins selling special stock. It will take a few hundred donations.

Now that your vendors are leveled up, and you have plenty of necessary materials, you can begin crafting and enhancing items at the Blacksmith.

Add seals to your weapons by enhancing them. Seals will offer helpful effects like improved Heat recharge, or improved Attack rating.

However, you will notice that some weapons cannot be crafted at the Blacksmith when you click on them.

These enchanted weapons must be brought to the Dead-Eyed Man in Mukurogai, who will unlock their full potential for you.

How To Craft Enchanted Gear

If you have your eye on an enchanted weapon, then you can start by crafting the prerequisite weapon at the Blacksmith.

Once you have that, then make your way to the riverside area in Mukurogai and locate the Dead-Eyed Man sitting beside the Jizo shrine.

If you want a "Best" quality weapon, then you must bring the Dead-Eyed man one to start with as he will not upgrade its quality for you.

The Dead-Eyed Man does not need money to craft weapons, he only needs the materials listed in the Smithing Diagram.

Talk to him and he will let you know when you have a prerequisite item on you and the choices will be listed in a dialogue box for you.

Select the item you want to upgrade to its enchanted form and watch as the Dead-Eyed Man transforms it.

For example, if you bring the Dead-Eyed Man a Yaksha Blade, he can transform it into the Skink Lizard. Then from that, he can produce the Muramasa, the final tier.

Each enchanted weapon will need to be acquired from the Dead-Eyed Man in this manner.

While he doesn't have the power to create these enchanted items, you will need to head back to the Blacksmith to fully upgrade these items with new seals.

Regardless of the weapon or accessory, filling each open slot with a seal will improve the item, and enhancing a seal will improve its effectiveness.

The full process for crafting and upgrading an enchanted item is:

  1. Acquire the necessary crafting materials.
  2. Craft a Best (Gold) quality prerequisite item at the Blacksmith.
  3. Equip the item and speak to the Dead-Eyed Man by the riverside in Mukurogai.
  4. Receive your enchanted item.
  5. Return to the Blacksmith to enhance your item with seals.

While it's common to struggle with the Ishin crafting system, you should be able to master this complex mechanic by patiently taking the process one step at a time.

Remember to carefully follow the Smithing Diagram lines to locate which prerequisite item is required for each enchanted item before you begin.

Some enchanted items have identical root prerequisite items, so be sure to transform that first item into its next form to set the path in stone.
