The Domination expansion in Legends of Runeterra saw the addition of three distinctly different champions, and with them, many supportive units and spells were added as well. However, these new cards are not necessarily bound to said new champions, as they can be utilized relatively flexibly across multiple decks.

This article aims to specifically rank the eight best spell cards brought into the game through the Domination expansion, bearing in mind that champion-specific spells will not be included. This only refers to Varus’ champion spell, as he is the only one of the three new champions whose spell is not its own card.

8 Crowd Pleaser

Crowd Pleaser is a pretty niche card, but makes this list for two main reasons: it’s a burst-spell, and, if your Flow is active, it creates a random new two-cost spell in your hand. Sure, the Quick Attack is nice, but outside of getting a good trade, the main value of this card comes from its Flow effect.

Randomly generated cards are always great because your opponent usually can’t play around them, and in this case, there are way too many two-cost spells in the game for them to prepare for them all.

7 Brutal Skirmish

Brutal Skirmish makes it to this list mainly because it destroys the targeted unit’s Equipment. Comparing it to Single Combat, which is a two-mana fast spell that has an allied and enemy unit strike each other, Brutal Skirmish ups the cost by one mana in exchange for Equipment destruction, which is very much worth it.

This is exceedingly valuable, especially if you can hit a Darkin Equipment, cranking up the value of this card even more.

6 Fish Fight

Fish Fight is similar to Brutal Skirmish, except no Equipment is destroyed. Instead, it either functions exactly like Single Combat, or if one of your units has Equipment, you can have your allied unit strike an enemy unit without the enemy unit striking back, only at the cost of your allied unit unequipping its weapon.

While this offers far more value than either Brutal Skirmish or Single Combat (since the enemy unit doesn’t strike back), it is a slow-spell at the end of the day, making it much easier to counter than a fast or burst-spell.

5 Condemn

Condemn finds its way onto this list above Brutal Skirmish and Fish Fight, two spells it is quite similar to, as it is better than them for a couple of reasons. First, the allied unit that strikes the enemy unit does not take any damage back from the enemy unit, nor does it have to sacrifice any Equipment it might have Equipped. Second, you can play this spell for a whopping one mana if you’ve attacked two or more times in a given turn. This value is undeniable and allows for an unbelievably massive tempo swing.

Due to its mana cost reduction condition, this spell is best put in decks with Vayne or that run cards that can Rally (or other spells that achieve the same effect), and as a result of this slight niche, it isn’t ranked higher. But make no mistake, this spell has massive value in the right deck.

4 The Unforgiving Cold

The Unforgiving Cold is an incredible card that offers remarkable offensive and defensive capabilities. This is a spell that is typically used reactively, as the fact that it’s a burst-spell makes it quite strong.

On top of that, if an ally was Equipped in a given game, the spell copies itself, so it Frostbites two minions instead of one. That, for four mana, is huge. If its double cast weren’t dependent on Equipment, it would be ranked higher, but even so, this card is typically run in a deck that revolves around Equipment, so it’s practically a must-have.

If your opponent’s strongest enemy has a SpellShield, The Unforgiving Cold’s first cast will break the shield, and the second cast will Frostbite the unit.

3 The Expanse’s Protection

The Expanse’s Protection is invaluable as it is a burst-spell that gives a SpellShield to an allied unit. As was the case with The Unforgiving Cold, this is a spell typically run in a deck focused around Equipment, so the reduction in cost of two mana will usually be active.

As such, being able to react to some of your opponent’s big removal spells like Vengeance or Concerted Strike for only two mana is a tremendous tempo swing. But, just be cautious that they don’t pop this SpellShield with a small one or two-damage spell like Pokey Stick or Mystic Shot.

2 Unworthy Soul

Unworthy Soul, like Brutal Skirmish, is a fast-spell and has the ability to destroy Equipment, and on top of that, it is a Recall, which is just a great spell in general when it comes to stalling your opponent’s aggression. That said, while it is five mana to play, its Flow effect reduces its cost by two mana, making it three mana.

This spell can even Recall a landmark, making it particularly good against certain landmark decks. However, without its Flow effect, five mana can be a bit clunky, but not too clunky, as Will of Ionia, a five mana fast-spell with no cost reduction Flow effect, only recalls a single unit. So, comparatively, Unworthy Soul still has more value, even without its Flow effect.

1 Drum Solo

Drum Solo is undeniably the best spell released in the Domination expansion simply due to how much value it provides.

While five mana may seem like a high cost to draw two, the fact that it is both a burst-spell and has a Flow effect that reduces the mana cost of each of the two cards you draw by two has nearly unparalleled value. Thus, unless you’re drawing one mana costing cards, you’re essentially spending one mana to draw two cards. Hard to top that.
