Summary

  • Baldur's Gate 3 console players won't be getting mods that add new races.
  • Larian has claimed that after a review, consoles do not have the "technical requirements" for mods that add races.

Last year, Baldur's Gate 3 fans on consoles were able to bring their games more in line with PC and download mods. Of course, there are restrictions, as you're only allowed 100 mods at a time, and every mod that is made available on consoles is triple-checked by Larian itself to make sure it can make the jump.

It made sense, as not every mod was going to be able to transfer seamlessly to consoles, but there was still a wide range of mods that could eventually land on Xbox and PlayStation. One of the more popular requests, and something that Larian has been looking into for a while, are the mods that allow fans to play as additional races that aren't included in the base version of Baldur's Gate 3, such as Tabaxi.

Baldur's Gate 3 Won't Be Getting Race Mods On Consoles, Confirms Larian

Unfortunately, any dreams that Baldur's Gate 3 console players had of running through the game as a Kobold, Goblin, or Tabaxi have been thoroughly shattered. Baldur's Gate 3's modding guidelines were updated earlier this week, letting modders know that "mods that introduce new playable races" will not be able to make the jump to console.

If you're thinking about going back to Baldur's Gate 3, the final patch is a perfect excuse.

In a statement on the official Larian forums (shared by Reddit user Conscious_Bit_8608), the developer explains that consoles don't have the "technical requirements" for new races to be added to Baldur's Gate 3 via mods, and therefore cannot be curated. Not much info was given besides that, so the exact problem will remain a mystery for now.

It's a little surprising though, as many are pointing out that Larian did approve a mod that allows you to play as a Kuo-Toa, so it must be possible in some capacity. There's not much we can do about it though, so it seems like if you do want to play through Baldur's Gate 3 as a Satyr or Loxodon, then you'll have to make the switch to PC.
