With Nomura revealing that KH4 will act as a 'story reset', Sora losing his memory seems like the best way to accommodate new and veteran players.
PostsThis came as a surprise for most fans who assumed that Kingdom Hearts had plenty of life left in it and was only just beginning its next arc, but it's a move that makes sense considering how long Sora's story has been going on for. It seems that the man behind Sora, Haley Joel Osment, agrees with that sentiment, as he commented on the possibility during an interview with IGN.
Haley Joel Osment Reacts To Kingdom Hearts 4 Working Towards A Series Conclusion
Earlier this week, IGN had the chance to speak to Haley Joel Osment during an episode of IGN Arcade that talked about his career, gaming habits, and, of course, his involvement in Kingdom Hearts. To start with, Osment seemed to be unaware of Kingdom Hearts 4 even existing, as he said that he's "always the last to know" and heard that a new game was rumoured to be coming soon.
IGN then had the chance to tell him that Kingdom Hearts 4 is indeed in development and being worked on, while also letting him know that Nomura recently said that KH4 is working towards ending the series. You might think that Osment would be sad to hear this considering how long he's been playing Sora, but he was actually very mature about the possibility of saying goodbye.
Osment said that he's sure that Nomura plans on finishing the series in a "satisfying way" and noted that going out on a high note is "sometimes the best thing to do" even if you love something and want to play it forever. Sora's voice actor also notes that the Kingdom Hearts games have plenty of replayability and will always stick around for fans, which is a nice way of looking at it.
And I think that sometimes that's the best thing to do, even if you have something that you love and you feel like you want to play it forever, to tie it up in a nice way and not let it drag out beyond where the creator wants it to go. I think that's the way to go. - Haley Joel Osment
Of course, while a lot of fans took this news to mean that Kingdom Hearts 4 is the last game in the series, that's not what Nomura meant. He actually was pointing out that the fourth game's new saga is moving towards a conclusion, which means that Osment has a few more chances to play the character before Sora finally gets a well-deserved rest.
