Today's Nintendo Direct had a big surprise in store for Kingdom Hearts fans, as a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4 was finally shared, giving us our first proper look at gameplay.

The last few years have been brutally quiet for Kingdom Hearts fans, but things have started to look up a little bit over the past year or so. While the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link wasn't quite the news we all wanted to hear, it was at least made up for with some brand-new screenshots of Kingdom Hearts 4.

With confirmation that the long-awaited fourth game wasn't really in development hell, Kingdom Hearts fans started speculating (or more accurately, hoping) that we might finally see an update in the near future, especially now that it's been some time since we've had an update. Well, that hope was proven right thanks to today's Nintendo Direct.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Trailer Shared At Nintendo Direct

Oh Sora, How We've Missed You

The trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4 came right after the announcement of a proper Switch 2 port for the whole series. It was mostly focused on Quadratum like the first trailer, but it did show us plenty of gameplay footage, as well as glimpses at some new and returning characters, including someone who looks remarkably like Luxord.

There's far too much footage to analyse right now, but one of the most interesting moments was when Young Xehanort appeared to shield Sora from the rain, confirming that the anniversary art was, in fact, a tease at his appearance. We also got to see some proper gameplay of KH4 for the first time, which gave us a glimpse of the new build mechanic.

I've been praying for a new Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer for ages now, but I certainly didn't expect it to appear at a Nintendo Direct of all places.

The big takeaway is that Kingdom Hearts 4 is going to be available day and date on Switch 2, although we still don't have a release window of any kind. Still, considering how long we waited just to see Kingdom Hearts again, it's amazing to finally have something new to talk about and over-analyse. Good job, Square.
