This Japanese God Of War Ragnarok Ad Is Even Better Than The Ben Stiller One

Those with eyeballs were treated to – or bemused by – a commercial for God of War Ragnarok starring Ben Stiller lately. The "comedy" ad also featured John Travolta and LeBron James with their kids as they sat around discussing their issues, in homage to Kratos and Atreus' daddy and son relationship, which could be strained at times during 2018's God of War. No doubt this relationship will be further explored in the upcoming sequel, while we can expect even darker and more mature themes in Ragnarok. But in Japan, they do things a little differently.
PlayStation Japan has shared a baffling commercial featuring three men dancing and singing with lyrics – in Japanese – that tell of a parent and son's journey into different realms and the challenges and obstacles they face. But it's a complete tonal change from the Santa Monica game as the delivery is much more like what you'd see in a children's TV show as they dance in front of a backdrop of pastel-shaded trees, flowers, and hills. It's rather calming, but nothing like the "death can have me, when it earns me" of prior game trailers.

Sometimes the main singer sports the weapons, such as the bow and arrow of Atreus or axe of Kratos, of the game, but otherwise the whimsical ad seems pretty unrelated to God of War apart from the lyrical relation. Whether this ad helps to sell the title in Japan remains to be seen, but for Western viewers it'll only feed the image that the Japanese like to have zany commercials for all sorts of things.
Viewers may or may not enjoy the sight of Mr Sato singing and dancing to "Goddo Obu Woragnaroku no Uta" (thanks Pushsquare) but it's interesting to see the marketing that PlayStation is doing for the game. It's certainly a tonal change from the days when they went all in on the edgy and mature themes back in the PS1 and PS2 days, when adverts directed by David Lynch were surreal and baffling for other reasons.
There is also the Ben Stiller God of War commercialto check out, although that one may be so bad it's good (at least to get people watching and remembering what it's selling). God of War Ragnarok comes to PS4 and PS5 on November 9, and the pre-load for digital purchases of the game has already begun.
