PlayStation Passkey is a new way to access your PlayStation account and one that will reduce the risk of others accessing it. It does this by negating the need for a password and replacing it with a passkey which, similarly to the one on your phone, can be one of three things. A PIN you type, your fingerprint, or facial recognition. You will naturally need to activate your PlayStation Passkey before you can start using it. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to do that, how to use your Passkey once it has been set up, and how to revert to using a password if you decide you prefer doing things the old-fashioned way.

Setting Up Your Passkey

Before you can say goodbye to typing in the password for your PlayStation account forever, you will need to sign in using it and your email address one last time. You can do that by heading to PlayStation's Passkey page and clicking the Activate now button. Doing that will take you to the PlayStation sign-in page where you will be prompted to enter your email address, and then your password if you don't have it saved.

Once signed in, you should be taken directly to your Security page. If that doesn't happen automatically, click the Security tab on the left of the screen. There, among other details and options, there will be a Sign in with Passkey option. If you haven't set up your Passkey already (and I'm assuming you haven't otherwise you wouldn't be reading this) it will be Deactivated. Hit the edit button on the right of the screen to change that.

Clicking Edit will prompt a pop-up a Sign In with Passkey pop-up. Click Create a Passkey and you will be given the option of doing so using Windows Hello or your phone. If you have Windows Hello, clicking that option will open the program and you can create your Passkey through there. If not selecting the phone option will bring up a QR code you will need to scan using your phone's camera.

A box will appear under the QR code on your phone screen that reads 'save a passkey'. Upon clicking that, the passkey method you use on your phone will be prompted, so PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition. Once you have used that method, if the process has been successful, a message will appear on your computer screen that reads "you can now use your passkey to sign in".

Signing In With Passkey

Once your Passkey has been created, you will then be able to use it to sign into your PlayStation account on the device of your choosing. If signing in on your computer, you will follow a similar process to the one above. A QR code prompt will appear, and scanning it with your phone camera, coupled with the PIN/fingerprint/facial recognition will sign you in. Signing into the PlayStation app will be even easier. Just open the app, enter your password, and hitting next will prompt whichever Passkey method you use.

Signing in on your console is the priority, of course. When signing in, a QR code that takes you to the PS App when scanned will appear. When taken to the app, a prompt will ask if you requested a sign-in on your PS5 or PS4. If you did, click yes, and your console will be signed into your account.

Additional Passkeys can be created through the Security tab on your PlayStation account. Go to Manage Passkeys, Create a Passkey, and then either Create on this Device or Create on Another Device. A list of the Passkeys you've already created can also be found and removed on this page.

Get Your Password Back

If for one reason or another you decide PlayStation Passkey isn't for you, it's not too late. You can still go back to signing in the old-fashioned way using your password. Head back to your account's security tab and click the same edit button that's now next to the activated Passkey. From there, you can follow the on-screen prompts to create a new password.
