I Am A Fool Who Thinks Hollow Knight: Silksong Is Actually Coming Out In 2025

Hollow Knight: Silksong has burned me before. The game has been promised to be ‘coming soon’ since 2019, but here we are in 2025, and there has been almost no official news from Team Cherry about its release save for a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it ad in a sizzle reel during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct saying it’s slated for release this year.
I know how it sounds, I know we’ve all been made fools of with promised release years coming and going for more than half a decade, I know that I’ve become Charlie Brown thinking that Team Cherry isn’t going to pull the football out from in front of me, but 2025 is the year.
Laugh at me all you want on Reddit, feel free to say ‘I told you so’ on New Year’s Eve when the game still hasn’t launched, but I feel it in the air. It’s finally time.
We’ve Been Down This Painful Path Before
I try not to put much stock into when games are coming out, thanks to how common it is for them to get delayed, canceled, or to just fully disappear without a word. With how tumultuous game development can be, it makes sense that publishers aren’t interested in announcing release dates unless the development team is confident it can hit it.
Hollow Knight: Silksong hasn’t ever committed to a specific release date, but it has been connected to two years before 2025. The game was mentioned briefly in an Xbox showcase in 2022, where it was announced that everything shown off during the showcase would be launching on Game Pass within a year, so fans expected Silksong to launch either in 2022 or 2023. It didn’t.
Now that we’ve gotten another look at the game during the Nintendo Direct earlier this month (albeit another brief look) and a commitment to 2025 as a release year, I’ve seen a lot of fans say that they’re having a tough time believing Team Cherry this time. While I normally would be with those people, I’m feeling uncharacteristically optimistic about 2025.
If Not Now, Then When?
The game has been in development for at least six years, and although it’s clear that the scope of the game has grown with time according to Team Cherry, we’ve entered a period of time where it’s completely believable that the game could be launching based on how long it’s been in development. Yes, there are plenty of stories about games being stuck in development hell, but getting an update in the Direct - which is a pretty significant Direct for the industry as a whole - is a sign that Silksong must actually be making progress.
We’ve known off the bat that updates for Silksong would be infrequent, but with each bread crumb of information, we get closer to the game’s actual launch. I know there’s not much to go off of other than a feeling, but if Team Cherry is committing to another release year in a showcase they knew would be one of the most watched gaming presentations of the last five years, I have no choice but to believe them.
I know that I’m looking at the football Team Cherry is holding while everyone watches shaking their heads at my foolishness, but if not now, then when? I’m going to kick that damn ball and I’m going to play Hollow Knight: Silksong, I promise.
