Hollow Knight: Silksong - Mosslands Full Walkthrough

Hollow Knight: Silksongbegins at the bottom of the Mosslands: Moss Grotto. But this introduction is far more vast than it appears at first, and as you unlock new abilities and expand your understanding of the game's mechanics, the potential of this area's most obscure and craftily hidden areas will be revealed to you.
This location rewards exploration and curiosity more than any other location. With few enemies, the Mosslands area is less about mastering your needle and more about trying to think like a level designer. Is this a false wall? Can I jump over this gap? What happens if I fall here? All of it is rewarded with unique prizes, making every corner of the Mosslands an exciting experience.

read moreAs a tutorial area, the Mosslands is basic in its design and enemies. In fact, of the enemies listed below, the last two are unique to this map area's connected subregion:
- Mossgrub
- Mossmir
- Aknid
- Overgrown Pilgrim
- Pilgrim Groveler
- Pilgrim Pouncer
- Mawling
- Marrowmaw
- Servitor Ignim
These enemies are generally simple, but the pilgrims in particular are worth noting as they will always drop Rosary.
The best place to farm Rosary in the early game is in the Mosshome section near the Marrow connection. This area drops several Rosary and is ideally placed near Shakra for map purchases.
The map for this area is not available until you have progressed nearly midway through the Marrow region. It is sold by Shakra, located at the Mosshome and Marrow connection.
Most of the map will remain empty at first, requiring several returns as you expand your abilities:
- Swift Step will unlock the area toward Wormway.
- Cling Grip will unlock the area west to the Chapel of the Wanderer.
- Needolin will unlock the Weavenest Atla region.
The Mosslands: All NPCs
The Chapel Maid is the first NPC you will encounter in the game. She can be found whacking you awake after defeating the Moss Mother.
However, you will have another encounter with her in Moss Grove after you open the door to the west area (toward the Chapel of the Wanderer). She will speak to you on the other side and then disappear after you leave.
Pebb and Flick are two notable NPCs in Bone Bottom, just above the Moss Grove.
- Pebb is your local goods trader, selling notable items you will want to farm Rosary for.
- Flick will build the Wish Wall and other structures in the town as you donate more funds.
While there are two other NPCs in the Bone Bottom, neither of them provide any particular help.
Shakra can appear in the Bone Bottom later to sell map supplies if you rested after meeting her in the Marrow.
And the final NPC of this area is the Moss Druid. You can find her in Mosshome after you acquire the Silkspear.
From the Silkspear Herrah statue, drop off to the right and use your ability to clear the silk strands that block the way. Moss Druid will be down and right from here.
Moss Druid not only give a Wish quest, but returning to give her leftover Mossberry will reward you with additional Rosary. Remember her location.
The Mosslands: All Collectible Items
Most of the collectible items in this region can be purchased from Pebb's shop. In fact, the Simple Key is required to unlock many of the important regions above (and below).
In fact, before acquiring Needolin, there are no collectible items available before you receive any ability upgrades (unless you are particularly skilled).
The first collectible item to be found is the Mask Fragment. You should have the Swift Step upgrade from the Deep Docks.
- From above the elevator shortcut between Mosshome and Bone Bottom, you can jump off to the left and over the top of metal contraptions.
- Sprint under the bug spewing acid from the ceiling westward.
- Head toward the Wormway Simple Lock door.
- Go under the door toward the watery bottom.
- The Mask Fragment will be hidden in an alcove to the right.
You can reach this earlier than Swift Step if you can cleverly pogo off the Aknids in the region. This is relatively tricky, however, and requires some crafty and slow progression under the spewing acid bug.
After you have acquired Needolin, you can find yourself two special items:
- The Spool Fragment can be gathered from the Weavenest Atla on the second floor (under the main floor's elevator) and to the left.
- The Weavelight charm is rewarded after defeating the Moss Mothers.
The Mosslands: All Crests
There are two crests in this area to collect, and neither requires any bosses to defeat.
Crest
Power
Location
Wanderer's Crest
Allows for quick striking at the cost of weapon length.
Requires the Cling Grip. Located in the Chapel on the west side of Moss Grotto. Must defeat a locked mob rush room.
Hunter's Crest Upgrades
Increases the power of attacks while gathered Silk is high.
Requires Needolin. Located in the Weavenest Atla to the far, bottom left side. Must destroy several walls and floors to reach. Speak to Eva.
The Wanderer's Crest is one you should find as soon as possible. This item vastly improves the ease of pogo-ing, allowing you to strike directly downward (as you could in the original game). It also functions similarly to the old Quick Claw charm.
The Mosslands: All Bosses
There is only one boss for the Mosslands technically, but the Moss Mother shows up twice. The first fight is a mandatory tutorial fight you cannot miss (though you can certainly miss the bench below her).
To fight her again in her second form, you will have to:
- Progress up to acquiring the skill Needolin.
- After gaining this skill, you can open Weavenest Atla.
- Go to the bench in the Weavenest Atla and jump into the pool to the left.
- Swim to the left wall and continue straight through the new area to the end.
Moss Mother will fight you again, but this time, she brought her twin to finish the fight.
We highly recommend having Thread Storm and a trap tool for the second fight. Crowd control is important.
The Mosslands: All Wishes
While several wishes can be picked up for nearby regions at the Wish Board, there are only a few specific to the Mosslands region:
Wish
Task
Reward
Berry Picking
Give 3 Mossberries to the Moss Druid.
Gain the Druid's Eye charm.
Bone Bottom Repairs
Donate 200 Shards.
Advance the repair and building of Bone Bottom
Garb of the Pilgrims
Gather 12 Pilgrim Shawls.
Beaded Rosary (60 Rosary)
A Lifesaving Bridge
Donate 300 Shards.
Builds a bridge to cover up the Moss Grove hole.
It appears that destroying the bridge in Bone Bottom after it is built to gain access to the Moss Grove area will permanently remove it, despite your purchase.
Ideal Progression Of The Mosslands
There are four notable stages to the Mosslands area:
- The early-game (Orange)
- Post-Swift Step (Green)
- Post-Cling Grip (Purple)
- Post-Needolin (Blue)
While the first phase cannot be avoided, the final three can be entirely missed on a playthrough.
The early-game tutorial area is straightforward and rail-roaded.Simply follow the natural progressionof the path, picking up both Mossberry in the area before taking on the Moss Mother.
Once Moss Mother is defeated, you can progress to Bone Bottom. There's nothing you can do here, so carry on to the Marrow for now.
There is a hidden path underneath a bone bridge in the Moss Grotto area. Swimming under it and left will reveal an area where you can climb for a small reward of Shards.
After obtaining the Mosslands map from Shakra, you can carry on to the Mosshome area. Up here, you'll encounter some new pilgrim enemies (you can farm these for Rosary!).
Rather than progress up to the Silkspear:
- Jump onto the platforms to the lever that opens a shortcut toward Bone Bottom.
- Go all the way down, following signs for the Bone Bottom town.
- Activate the elevator via the switch beside it.
- Jump to the right until you can spy an Akrid flying below with a Mossberry you can collect.
Return to Mosshome where you hit the lever. This time, go up.
In the new room, continue right until you see a signboard and a wall of silk strings ahead. Your path up to the Silk Spear isabove the string wall.
You can use that same Silkspear ability to clear the silk strings that barred your path before.
The signboard in this area can be activated with the Needolin, its text changing when playing near it.
Keep going down from the Mosshome area until you reach a dark room with a single aknid near the west exit (ignore Moss Druid for now!). Instead of leaving this room, head right to a hidden wall in the shadows.
An aknid flying about in this room will have another Mossberry for you. Take that berry up a roomand to the right to the Moss Druid.
This should clear your Berry Picking Wish immediately and reward you with some extra Rosary.
Until you clear Deep Docks enough to gain the Swift Step ability, there is nothing left to do in the Mosslands. During that interim, focus on gathering up a large amount of Rosary.
Once you gather 500 Rosary, purchase the Simple Key. Head up the shortcut elevator to Mosshome and take a left in the room above the elevator to jump a gap toward several steep contraptions.
From here:
- Go westward, sprinting through a room with an acid beast.
- Pick up the Mask Fragment below the locked door at the dead end.
- Unlock the door to the Wormways.
From here, you'll want to continue through the Wormways area until you can jump across the top of the Mosslands to Shellwood. It is in this area that you'll unlock Cling Grip.
You should also unlock the Drifter's Cloak from the Far Fields to make things easier.
With Cling Grip acquired, you can return to the Mosslands to finish the west end. To enter that area, you must:
- Go up to the door that leads to the acid beast (on the way to the Wormways).
- Rather than enter the beast's room, begin to fall down, sticking to the left wall.
- Pick up the Weaver's Effigy item on the way.
- Use Cling Grip and Swift Step to continue onward to the left until you reach an exit above the locked door.
Once you enter this new room, you can drop and open the locked door to create a shortcut.
In the west end, continue left until you reach the building on the far shore. Inside, the Wanderer's Crest is guarded by a mob room.
Clear out all the enemies inside to claim this great prize. This will end the main portion of the Mosslands area.
Make sure you pick up the extra Mossberry carried by the aknid above the chapel for some extra Rosary from the Moss Druid!
The Weavenest Atla Walkthrough
Although a separate map area, it is short and only connected to the Mosslands. Many of its enemies are identical here, and it is relatively straightforward.
To open Weavenest Atla, you must have:
- Defeated Widow at Bellhart.
- Acquired the Needolin skill.
Use that skill on the strange door in the bottom right corner of the Moss Grove.
Inside, continue right until you find a large empty room with two strange devices on the ceiling. Hit both to activate the console in the middle room.
Take the map from the central console and then return to the elevator. From here, you can do several things:
- Take the elevator down and claim the bench to the left.
- Jump above the elevator on the bottom floor and Cling Grip up to the path on the left. Follow it to the Spool Fragment.
- Return to the elevator shaft and Cling Grip up to a hidden path on the right. Follow it to a text sign and the Rune Harp.
Most notably in this main area, you can go right from the elevator on the bottom floor. There are several breakable walls and floors you can follow to Eva's shrine.
Speak with Eva, and accept her Insight. She will upgrade your Hunter's crest.
Keep her location in mind because you can continue returning to Eva at different points of your progression for more upgrades.
After the main items in the central chamber have been gathered, return to the bench and jump into the water. Continue swimming left to reveal a hidden passage into a new area.
This new area is very straightforward but filled with enemies. Progress carefully all the way left to discover the final secret of the Mosslands: the Moss Mother Duo.
Defeat both Moss Mothers, and you will be rewarded with the Weavelight charm. This will conclude the Mosslands area.
