Couch Co-Op Is "Technically Feasible" In Helldivers 2, CEO Reveals

In the world of online multiplayer, couch co-op play is becoming a lost art. Year over year, few games, if any, offer true split-screen play, and while there are signs of a potential comeback, we're still a long ways away from the heyday of having basically every game also double as a couch title.
One game that would certainly be ripe for a couch experience is none other than Helldivers 2, the breakout live-service shooter from Arrowhead Studios that recently made its way beyond PlayStation consoles with a release on Xbox. It turns out that it might be possible.
When It Comes To Split-Screen, Never Say Never, But Also, Never Say Never
As first spotted by Insider Gaming, Arrowhead Studios CEO Shams Jorjani wrote on Discord, in response to a question whether the game would ever get split-screen, particularly in light of its surge in popularity, to which Jorjani responded:
It's technically feasible, but I have no idea if it's a feature ppl really want. It's on our 'To Investigate' list.
There are two sides to this response worth pointing out:
- Technically speaking, split-screen for Helldivers 2 is actually possible, which is a major development, especially considering just how demanding some games can be, which is why the feature, aside from the popularity of online multiplayer, is almost never present.
- But also, with it being on the "To investigate" list, it could be something that the studio eventually decides against after significant research into whether it would actually be used. Or something that is never spoken of again, meaning don't take too much stock in things.
Still, at least it is an option, and perhaps after enough demand, it'll make its way into the game, or at the very least, push other developers into thinking more about what is actually possible.
