In a huge shake-up for Magic: The Gathering's Secret Lair service, a last-minute decision has been made to make the upcoming Hatsune Miku Commander deck a print-to-demand drop, but only for 24 hours. This comes just weeks after I spoke with Steve Sunu, the principal lead of Secret Lair, at MagicCon. He warned that major changes to the delivery of Secret Lair drops were unlikely, so it's not entirely clear what influenced this change.

Following the huge scalping issues with the Goblin Storm deck, it appears as though Wizards of the Coast has seen fit to offer the Hatsune Miku deck as print-to-demand for a limited time period. This should help everyone who wants the deck to secure one, but the shipping times might still put some people off.

Hatsune Miku Goes Print-To-Demand With Shipping Catch

Currently, only the philanthropic Secret Lair drops are delivered via print-to-demand, such as the Their Magic Is Limitless campaign, which supported the Global Fund for Women. However, with less than a week to go, the decision has been made to offer the Hatsune Miku Commander deck on a short-term print-to-demand run.

This means that everyone who orders the deck through the Secret Lair website will receive a copy, but shipping timelines vary depending on when you place yourorder.

Wizards of the Coast has not stated that this new approach to printing will extend beyond the Hatsune Miku deck, but it's very possible that it is a trial for future consideration.

As usual, a waiting room will open for this drop at 8 am PT on Monday, 10 August. At 9 am PT, the purchase queue will open, and the waiting room queue will be randomized. Those who are first in line will have a chance to order the Hatsune Miku Commander deck with shipping beginning ASAP.

If you fall outside this short window, your deck will not be shipped until May 2027 for North American orders or June 2027 for those in the EU and UK. This is a huge gap but allows Wizards to ensure it can fulfill every order without disrupting its production of sets and other Secret Lairs in the meantime.

Price Confirmed Alongside Deck Contents

Alongside the confirmation that this deck is a short-run print-to-demand, we now also know exactly what we're getting in the box.

  • 12 x Foil borderless cards with new Hatsune Miku artwork
  • 14 x Foil borderless basic lands with Hatsune Miku artwork (7 x Plains, 7 x Forests)
  • 74 x Nonfoil reprints
  • 10 x Nonfoil double-sided tokens
  • A Trostani, Selesnya's Voice // Miku, Song of the People display Commander
  • 1 x Deck box

The deck will cost $149.99, the same as the Goblin Storm deck earlier this year, so it's comforting to know that this added printing run hasn't resulted in a higher cost for the deck.

Only time will tell whether or not this new printing method will stop scalping. I have every hope that those who are at the front of the queue with the intention of trying to sell the deck for a huge profit are left disappointed, but I also feel as though the impatience of some players will lead to decks still being sold for an inflated price on sites like eBay.
