Hyper Light Breaker: 8 Beginner Tips

If you're a roguelike beginner, it can be overwhelming to know what kinds of weapons you should go for. Of course, personal preference will always play a part. After all, it's your playstyle that matters most. But, here are a handful of extremely helpful Blades that you should be on the lookout for in Hyper Light Breaker.

Currently, Hyper Light Breaker is in Early Access. This info is subject to change with the launch of the full game!

10 Rotted Soldier’s Light

Effects

Special Attack

Enemies inflicted with Rot deal less DMG and take more DMG.

Increased overall Blade speed.

Fire a cross-shaped projectile.

Inflict Burn DMG.

This balanced Blade is really powerful at higher levels of durability. With a significant increase to your Breaker's HP and attack power, this one is not to be underestimated. Enemies that are inflicted with Rot (which often occurs) won't deal nearly as much damage, and you can plow right through time.

Plus, the added burn damage can be a real boon when you're surrounded by swarms of enemies. If you're extracting on low health, this Blade can prove immensely helpful as well. While the projecticle special isn't always that helpful, when used correctly, it's certainly not a detriment.

9 Crystal Gamma Claws

Effects

Special Attack

Enemies take ten DMG after being crystallized.

15 percent more Armor and DMG.

Drop three mines for extra DMG.

Most Gamma Claws come with the inherent ability to increase damage done after a perfect parry. Since perfect parries are an essential skill you need to master to beat the Overgrowth's crowns, having this weapon on your side is sure to help in a pinch. The special for this weapon, dropping three mines, is amazing as well.

The best way to use this Blade is to dive into large groups of enemies, drop mines, and then dash out again, preparing for your next wave of attacks. In this way, you can deal massive AoE damage to multiple enemies, and then quickly dash back in for follow-up attacks.

8 Hacker’s Soldier’s Light

Effects

Special Attack

Hack, which slows an enemy's movement and attack speed.

Fire a cross-shaped projectile forward.

Additional Burn DMG.

Hack is, frankly, one of the best effects Blades can have. It slows down enemy movement and attack speed significantly. So, if you're extracting or dealing with large groups of enemies, slowing many of them down with a sweeping, charged attack can save your life out in the Overgrowth, especially if you're playing co-op.

What's more, this particular variation of the weapon also has additional Burn damage. Inflicting both Hack and Burn onto enemies at once will have you cleaving through waves of combatants like butter. Also, Soldier's Light blades have the inherent ability to regain battery (or ammunition) on finishing kills.

7 Finisher Breaker’s Buster

Effects

Special Attack

The final hit of an attack combo does 15 percent more DMG.

Smash weapon into the ground, knocking back enemies and dealing DMG.

For players who prefer a heavy playstyle, the Finisher Breaker's Buster is the Blade for you. This weapon has an additional Critical Hit chance, and deals massive damage when used correctly. It's special also creates a knockback effect, meaning it's nearly impossible for enemies to surround you.

The wide range of your attack, in conjunction with your Finishing Edge boon (which allows you to deal 15 percent more damage overall) means you'll take out smaller enemies in just one hit. This is also extremely helpful for bigger combatants.

6 Projectile Zero Edge

Effects

Special Attack

Charged Attack fires a projectile.

Smash weapon into the ground, knocking back enemies and dealing DMG.

The Zero Edge is another heavy weapon that deals great damage, but also has a ranged effect. When you charge up an attack using this weapon, you'll fire a projectile. It's also a little bit quicker than other heavy weapons, meaning you don't necessarily have to sacrifice speed to wield this Blade.

There are other, more powerful versions of this same blade, but the standard Projectile Zero Edge tends to spawn in the shop and in the wild relatively frequently. So, it's typically a good idea to pick this one up if you see it. You can always upgrade it back at the Cursed Outpost as well, even if you don't find an especially powerful version of it out in the Overgrowth.

5 Hacker’s Solar Bolters

Effects

Special Attack

Hack, which slows enemy's movement and attack speed.

Increase all CRIT chances by 20 percent.

As mentioned, Hack is such an invaluable ability to have. Solar Bolters are also a relatively fast-paced dual-wielding weapon with great offensive power. What's most fun about this variety of Blade is that you get extra damage on enemies when attacking from behind. This means you can catch them off guard, inflict Hack, and then go in for the finishing blow.

The special attack for this weapon can feel a little lackluster, but if used correctly, it's actually lethal. When you activate this special, your Critical Hit chances will go up by 20 percent. If your Sycom or Breaker already has a high Critical Hit chance, that means you can stack these effects on top of one another to become a deadly assassin out in the Overgrowth.

4 Flashblade Vector Hammer

Effects

Special Attack

Extend Blade range by 20 percent.

Spins your weapon around in a circle, knocking back enemies.

Hammers can be a bit tricky to use, especially in early runs. But, if you can master the rhythm and pace of this weapon, it can be incredibly useful. At bare minimum, the Vector Hammer deals huge damage, especially if you're already running a damage intensive Breaker and Sycom. What's more, the spin special attack is great for crowd control in dense areas.

However, the real ticket here is the Flashblade extension. When you use your Flashblade attack, your range is extended by 20 percent. This means that, even in close-quarters combat, you'll be sure to keep enemies from rushing you all at once. Keeping your distance from other melee fighters is an essential skill you must master to survive and extract in time.

3 Bomber Giant’s Needle

Effects

Special Attack

Projectile, Blade can be thrown.

Summon three enemy bombs for extra DMG.

There are plenty of different variations of this weapon that appear in this roguelike adventure. But, almost any of them can work for players who prefer a melee and ranged attack all in one. The Giant's Needle can be thrown like a projectile from a distance. It also has incredibly speedy attack combos, making this a good Blade for ranged and melee attack patterns.

The special attack bombs are also not bad, especially because unlike other bomb effects, these bombs chase down enemies like heat-seeking missiles. The real trick to mastering this Blade is getting your aim right on the projectile throw. But, if you can nail those critical hits, you'll be very well-off.

2 Burning Solar Bolters

Effects

Special Attack

Burning effect deals five DMG, with a stacking effect.

Increase all CRIT DMG by 20 percent for three seconds.

Burning is also a highly effective status effect, particularly when it stacks. With an increase to Critical Hit damage as well, this otherwise low attack weapon can actually output a lot of overall damage when used correctly. Like other Solar Bolters, the trick here is to make sure you're attack from behind as often as possible.

If you couple attacking from behind to increase your Critical Hit damage right after activating your special attack, you'll be amazed at how fast you can tear through enemies. Just make sure you're keeping light on your toes and not getting stuck in huge swarms of enemies.

1 Burning Zero Edge

Effects

Special Attack

Burning effect deals five DMG.

Spins your weapon around in a circle, knocking back enemies.

A heavier weapon with a burning effect makes up for the fact that you'll be doing less individual attacks. That's why this combo is a great one to have in your vault back at the Cursed Outpost. Plus, you can combine your charged projectile attack with Burn, meaning you'll have a ranged attack option as well.

Lastly, make sure you use your special knockback attack when you're completely surrounded by enemies. This will likely inflict burn on most, if not all of your assailants, meaning you'll start an enormous damage-doing inferno on the battlefield.
